The Moment Everything Shifted
Graham placed the documents on the table beside my bed.
“Just sign it, Marissa. We can handle everything else later.”
I looked at the papers without touching them.
“And after I sign?”
“The merger proceeds, the press doesn’t hear anything unnecessary, and we work out an arrangement privately.”
There it was. Not a question about Lucy’s health. Not a question about whether I was all right. Not even a request to hold his daughter. Only the merger.
I reached toward the nurse call button.
Graham noticed.
“Don’t make this dramatic.”

I pressed it.
A nurse entered a few seconds later.
“Is everything okay in here?”
I kept my voice calm.
“I’d like hospital staff to ask my visitors to leave. My former husband is pressuring me to sign legal documents, and I don’t want any further discussion without my attorney present.”
Graham went pale. Brielle stepped away from him.
But before either of them could speak, someone knocked on the open door. Dana Whitaker walked in carrying a slim gray briefcase.
For the first time that afternoon, I relaxed.
