The Party She Couldn’t Take Away

That afternoon our house filled with friends, teachers, and neighbors. Dad wore an apron that read PROUD GIRL DAD. When it was my turn to speak, I held up my graduation stole.
“This morning I thought this meant what I’d done alone,” I said. “But none of us gets here alone.” I walked over and placed the stole around Dad’s neck.
“This belongs to the man who worked nights and still came to every game. Who learned to braid hair and never let me think I was abandoned because I wasn’t worth staying for. Biology makes you related — but staying makes you family. A father is someone who chooses you, even when it’s hard.”
He whispered, “I’d choose you in every lifetime.”
