Part 5: The Secret Wasn’t What I Thought
Lucas wandered into the kitchen looking for juice.
I pointed toward his drawing.
“When did you make this?”
“At Dad’s.”
“And why did you draw three children?”
He looked at me as though I had asked why the sky was blue.
“Because Harper was there.”
Mia appeared behind him.
“Dad said Harper needed us.”
Ethan shut his eyes.
That was when the entire picture changed.
For eight days, my imagination had created every ugly possibility.
A secret relationship.
A hidden daughter.

Some enormous betrayal Ethan had kept from everyone.
But there had been no affair.
No secret biological child.
What Ethan had hidden was a frightened little girl who had slowly become part of his children’s lives.
That did not excuse what he had done.
After the children returned to the den, I pointed at my son.
“Listen carefully. Being kind to Harper does not erase the fact that you frightened everyone who loves you.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to vanish because you think you’re protecting us.”
“I know.”
“Your children deserved to hear from you.”
“Yes.”
“And you never put children in a position where they think they have to keep adult secrets.”
He nodded.
Finally, he gave a tired, almost embarrassed laugh.
“I thought I could handle one problem by myself.”
“And how did that work out?”
He rubbed his face.
“Terribly.”
That answer saved him from another lecture.
Harper stayed that night.
Ethan had received temporary approval to care for her while Claire recovered and while professionals handled the situation involving Ryan.
Nothing was permanent.
Ethan was very careful about that.
He didn’t tell Harper she would live with him forever.
He didn’t promise what he couldn’t guarantee.
He simply told her what he could promise.
“You’re safe tonight.”
For a frightened five year old, sometimes tonight is enough.
