My Son Said He’d Be Gone for One Weekend—Eight Days Later, He Returned With a Little Girl Who Called Him “Dad”

Part 1: A Weekend That Should Have Been Ordinary

For illustrative purposes only

When my son asked me to watch his twins for a couple of days, I didn’t hesitate.

Ethan traveled occasionally for work, and his eight year old twins, Lucas and Mia, loved spending weekends at my house. To them, staying with Grandma meant pancakes in the morning, movies after dinner, and being able to leave toys scattered around my living room without getting too many complaints.

Ethan called me Thursday evening.

“Just Friday through Sunday, Mom,” he said. “I have a quick work trip. I’ll pick them up Sunday evening.”

“Of course.”

There was nothing strange about his voice.

Friday morning, he arrived with Lucas and Mia, two backpacks, Mia’s roller skates, and just enough clothes for two nights.

He hugged them both.

“Be good for Grandma.”

“We’re always good,” Mia protested.

Ethan laughed.

Lucas gave him the skeptical expression he seemed to have mastered recently.

“Call us tonight?”

“I will.”

Ethan kissed the tops of their heads, waved at me, got into his car, and drove away.

I had no idea that eight days would pass before I saw him again.

Friday evening came and went.

He didn’t call.

That concerned me, but not enough to panic. Ethan was an adult. Meetings could run late. Flights could be delayed. Phones could lose their charge.

Saturday passed peacefully.

By Sunday afternoon, I had already made spaghetti because it was one of the twins’ favorite meals. Mia sat at the kitchen table coloring while Lucas repeatedly asked when his father was coming.

“He said this evening,” I reminded him.

At seven, there was no message.

At eight, still nothing.

At nine, I finally called.

Straight to voicemail.

“Ethan, it’s Mom. Call me when you get this. The kids are fine. I just want to know when you’re coming.”

I tried to keep my voice steady.

But something in my stomach had already started to tighten.

Monday morning arrived.

No text.

No missed call.

Nothing.

By noon, irritation had become unease.

I called Ethan’s office.

I expected someone to say he was in a meeting.

Instead, the receptionist sounded confused.

“Mrs. Carter, Ethan isn’t traveling for us this week.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What do you mean?”

“He took personal leave.”

Personal leave.

For several seconds, I couldn’t say anything.

There had never been a work trip.

And suddenly, every harmless explanation I had created disappeared.
