The Calls That Followed
By the time my phone began to vibrate, I was already en route to the airport.
The first call came from my mother.
The second from my father.
The third from Isabella.
Then the messages began.
— “What is this?” —
— “You need to explain this immediately.” —
— “4.2 million dollars a year?” —
I did not answer.
Not out of punishment.
But because, for the first time, I realized I did not need to respond to be heard.
I turned off my phone before boarding.
And I went home.
