The Gift
The box was small, silver, understated—the kind of object that did not demand attention at first glance but drew curiosity through its quiet presence.
I set it on the reception counter with deliberate care.
— “This is for Isabella,” — I said to the receptionist, my voice steady again, controlled in a way that surprised even me.
Isabella glanced at the box, her expression flickering briefly between curiosity and dismissal.
— “You didn’t have to bring anything,” — she said, though her tone implied that whatever was inside could never truly matter.
I met her gaze one last time.
— “I know,” — I replied.
Then I turned, walked out of the hotel, and did not look back.
