I was about to announce my engagement—until four six-year-old boys who looked exactly like me exposed the devastating secret my own mother had hidden for years

The First Night of a Different Life

The apartment became quiet again.

Grant turned toward Tessa. He had imagined finding her hundreds of times during the years after she disappeared. In none of those dreams had four little boys been standing beside her.

He approached them slowly and crouched down.

Miles studied his face.

“Are you really our dad?”

Grant felt tears fill his eyes. He looked at Tessa before answering.

“I’m your biological father.”

Miles frowned.

“Is that the same thing?”

Grant gave a shaky smile.

“Not exactly.” He glanced at all four boys. “Being a real dad is something I’ll have to prove.”

Micah walked closer.

“Will you leave tomorrow?”

The question hurt more than anything else that night.

Grant shook his head.

“Not unless your mom asks me to.”

The boys looked toward Tessa. Grant did too.

Tessa’s eyes were wet, but her expression had softened.

“I can’t pretend the last six years didn’t happen.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“And you can’t arrive with money and expect everything to be fixed.”

“I know.” Grant stood. “I don’t want to purchase a place in their lives, Tessa. I want to earn one.”

She studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded toward the empty chair.

“Then start by staying for breakfast.”

Grant smiled through his tears.

“I can do breakfast.”

Milo raised his hand.

“We like pancakes.”

Grant laughed. It was the first genuine laugh he had managed all evening.

“Then pancakes it is.”

That night, there was no engagement announcement, no champagne toast, and no carefully planned photograph for Chicago society pages. Instead, Grant Hollowell sat on the floor of an apartment he rarely used while four six-year-old boys argued over which movie to watch.

For the first time in years, his life was completely unplanned.

And for the first time in years, it finally felt like his own.
