Four Boys Changed Everything
A small sound came from behind the sofa. Miles and Mason had awakened. They stood together in their pajamas, watching the adults.
Vivienne looked at them. Her entire expression changed.
Grant watched her eyes move from one face to another. The boys were impossible to explain away.
Mason pushed his hair backward with two fingers. Then touched the side of his neck.
Vivienne’s face lost its color.
Grant spoke quietly.
“They’re mine.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t know that.”
Tessa answered before Grant could.
“I do.”
Vivienne lowered her voice.
“This can be handled privately.”
Grant stared at her.
“Handled?”
“Grant, think carefully. Four previously unknown children could create questions about the trust, succession planning, board confidence—”
He finally understood. Not one word about the boys’ health. Not one question about their names. Not one question about whether they had been safe. Only the trust. The board. The family reputation.
“They slept in temporary shelters,” Grant said quietly. “While you hosted charity dinners about helping families.”
Vivienne looked away.
“I made the decision I believed was necessary at the time.”
“For me?”
She hesitated. That hesitation answered everything.
Grant nodded slowly.
“No. You made it for the Hollowell name.”
