The Day My Father Finally Appeared
Nearly a year passed before I saw my father again.
One afternoon, while picking Lily up from her art class, I noticed a familiar figure standing beside an old sedan parked near the end of the street.
He looked older than I remembered.
His shoulders slumped slightly, as though carrying a weight he had finally begun to recognize.
When he approached us, his voice trembled.
— “I just wanted to know if Lily is doing okay,” — he said quietly. — “Your mother still doesn’t understand what she did wrong. But I do.” —
I studied his face for a moment.
The anger I once felt had faded.
What remained was distance.
— “Where were you when she had to crawl on the floor and bark?” — I asked calmly.
He lowered his head.
— “Your silence made you part of it.” —
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
— “I brought something for Lily,” — he said softly.
Before he could offer it, I raised my hand gently.
— “She doesn’t need your money,” — I replied. — “She needed protection you never gave her.” —
Then I added quietly.
— “Please respect the no-contact order.” —
I took Lily’s hand and walked away.
She didn’t look back.
