The Arabian Nights: A Controversial Reputation
In some tales from The Arabian Nights, anklets are portrayed with more ambiguous undertones. In certain regions of the Arab world, anklets were at times associated—depending on interpretation—with prostitutes or homosexual women, giving them a layered and sometimes controversial meaning. This association, however, is not universal and varies widely across different contexts and cultures.
