On Our Wedding Night, My Husband Revealed a Dark Secret—Then I Found My Missing Mother’s Necklace in His Pocket

Part 3: The Question He Couldn’t Answer

“Lucas told the police he followed you because he wanted to talk. He said he tried to get you to stop.”

“Did he cause the crash?”

“I don’t know exactly what happened on that road,” Hannah admitted. “But he was there.”

I reached into my handbag and took out my mother’s broken necklace.

Lucas had claimed he came across my wrecked car and rescued me. He’d never mentioned that he was chasing me after I discovered his affair.

He hadn’t merely hidden an embarrassing mistake.

He had concealed the circumstances of the night that changed my whole life.

I thanked Hannah for telling me the truth and ended the call.

For a long time, I sat in the dusty apartment, surrounded by photographs of a woman whose memories had been taken from her.

I finally understood why Lucas had known my favorite coffee, why he’d removed lilies from my hospital room, and why he always seemed to anticipate my needs.

He hadn’t guessed those things.

He had learned them during the years we’d already spent together.

I gathered the engagement photograph, the old phone, and my mother’s necklace. Before leaving, I photographed the apartment and copied the messages I needed to keep.

That evening, I returned to our suburban home before Lucas finished his hospital shift.

I set everything on the dining table, then opened my leather notebook to a blank page.

For two years, I’d recorded the facts Lucas helped me uncover.

This time, I wrote one without his help.

My husband knew me before my accident. He knew why I was driving that night. And he let me marry him without telling me.

At nine-thirty, headlights swept across the front windows.

Lucas was home.

I heard his key turn in the lock, followed by his familiar footsteps.

“Jenna?” he called. “Why are you sitting in the dark?”

He walked into the dining room and stopped.

His eyes moved from the engagement photograph to the old cellphone, then to my mother’s necklace.

The color drained from his face.

I looked straight at him.

“Before you say anything, Lucas, I want you to understand something.”

He stood motionless.

“I know about Hannah. I know about our first engagement. And I know you were following me the night I crashed.”

His lips parted, but no words came.

Then I asked the question he’d avoided for two years.

“Did you marry me because you loved me—or because you were afraid I’d remember why I left you?”

Lucas stood in the dining room, staring at the evidence spread across our table. The engagement photograph, my old cellphone, and my mother’s gold necklace had finally exposed the secret he’d kept throughout our marriage.

For two years, I’d believed we were strangers who fell in love during my recovery. Now I knew he had been my fiancé before the accident, and that his betrayal was the reason I fled into a storm that nearly ended my life.

“Answer me, Lucas,” I said. “Why did you let me marry you without knowing any of this?”

He lowered himself into a chair.

“Because I was afraid of losing you.”

“You already lost me the night I discovered you slept with my best friend.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

“Then why pretend we were meeting for the first time?”

Lucas stared at the photograph of our first engagement.

“When you woke up, you couldn’t remember me. The doctors warned me not to overwhelm you with traumatic information, and I told myself I’d explain everything when you were stronger.”

“But you never did.”

“At first, I kept waiting for your memories to return. Then you started trusting me again, and I was terrified of destroying that.”

I looked at him in disbelief.

“So you decided I was better off not knowing?”

“I thought I could make things right.”

“By lying to me every day?”

He covered his face with both hands.

“I convinced myself that if I loved you enough, I could become the man you deserved.”

I glanced toward my leather notebook.

Lucas had been the one to help me rebuild my identity. He knew my habits, my fears, and the smallest details of my former life because we’d already shared years together.

Instead of giving those memories back to me, he’d used what he knew to make himself indispensable.

“Did you know Hannah’s name was in my notebook?” I asked.

He nodded.

“And you knew I’d crossed it out?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever consider telling me why?”

“I was afraid you’d remember everything.”

His admission hurt more than I expected.

I picked up my mother’s necklace.

“Why did you keep this hidden?”

Lucas looked at the pendant.

“I recovered it from your car that night. I wanted to give it back, but you remembered wearing it before the crash.”

“So returning it would have forced you to admit you were there.”

He nodded again.

“I brought it to the wedding because I finally intended to tell you.”

“After we were married?”

He said nothing.

I understood his silence.

He had wanted the ceremony finished before revealing something that might have made me refuse to marry him.

“You didn’t give me a second chance at love,” I said. “You gave yourself a second chance without asking whether I wanted one.”

Lucas began to cry.

“But the last two years were real, Jenna. You loved me. We were happy.”

I felt tears gathering in my own eyes.

He was right about one thing.

I had loved him deeply.

I remembered the nights he stayed awake when pain kept me from sleeping, the mornings he’d urged me through rehabilitation, and the happiness I felt when he proposed.

Those moments had been real to me.

But they hadn’t been built on the truth.

“I loved the man I thought you were,” I told him. “I didn’t know you were hiding the reason my life fell apart.”

He reached across the table.

“Please. We can work through this.”

For illustration purposes only

I pulled my hand away.

“Before the accident, I had the right to decide whether I could forgive you for betraying me with Hannah. After the accident, I still had that right.”

“I know,” he whispered.

“No, Lucas. You took that choice away from me twice.”
