My Sister Broke Into My Luxury Penthouse While I Was in London, Claiming It Was Hers—But She Forgot I Was a Deputy U.S. Marshal

PART 2: Unit 14B

I demanded an explanation. Neither of my parents said a word. That mystery was referred for further investigation, but I couldn’t let it pull my focus from what was already happening inside my home. I looked toward the senior agent.

"I want everyone removed from my apartment."

He nodded. Paige immediately started protesting.

"You’re really throwing out your own sister?"

"You entered my home without permission."

"Mom said you’d understand!"

"I told all of you no."

My father stepped forward. "We are family, Marissa. That should mean something."

"It does. But it doesn’t mean you own my property."

My mother accused me of humiliating Paige. I reminded her that Paige had tried to force open my private office. She’d even encouraged Tyler to help her investigate the locked door. That detail bothered me more than the splintered wood and twisted metal. Tyler was a child. He never should have been put in that position.

The agent instructed everyone to gather their essential belongings. When Paige began to cry, her children grew frightened. I muted my microphone for a moment. I wasn’t changing my decision, but watching children suffer because of the adults’ choices was painful.

My attorney, Daniel Cross, stood beside me in the secure room. "You can protect your property without taking responsibility for their choices," he reminded me.

I nodded, then switched the microphone back on. "Paige, I’ve arranged a hotel suite for you and the children tonight. You can discuss longer-term housing arrangements with the appropriate services."

My mother scoffed. "So now you’re pretending to be generous?"

"No, Mom. I’m making sure the kids have somewhere safe to sleep."

Then the agent introduced another piece of evidence. A locksmith had shown up at the building with instructions to replace the locks, and the work order carried my father’s name. Richard Keane. My father hadn’t merely helped Paige get inside. He’d planned to make it hard for me to ever get back in.

The agent studied the paperwork. My father looked away. I spoke quietly: "Dad, you were going to change the locks on a home you don’t own."

He didn’t answer. Then the agent mentioned a storage unit. Unit 14B. For the first time, Dad looked genuinely afraid.

Unit 14B sat in a storage facility near my parents’ house. I’d learned of its significance after Dad accidentally forwarded me a receipt. The invoice listed charges for document scanning, private shredding, and after-hours access, which was strange enough that I asked my attorney to look into it through lawful channels.

The records we obtained raised serious concerns. Someone had been preparing documents suggesting Paige had permission to occupy my penthouse. There were draft statements describing a supposed family agreement, copies of old access information, unsent letters addressed to Paige at my home, and notes on how to make it look as though she lived there. One folder was labeled: MARISSA — LEVERAGE. Inside were records of money I’d given my family over the years, annotated by my father as proof of ongoing financial obligations.

I stared at those notes in disbelief. I had sent that money because I wanted to help. He had apparently been trying to turn my generosity into an argument that my property belonged to everyone.

When the documents were displayed, Paige turned toward our parents. "You told me Marissa had agreed."

Mom looked irritated. "She would have agreed eventually."

I almost laughed. That one sentence explained my whole childhood. In our family, saying no had never been enough. A refusal was simply treated as an invitation to keep pushing.

Then Paige admitted something I didn’t expect. She hadn’t been living in her car, as our parents had claimed. She was struggling with housing, but she had exaggerated her situation after being encouraged to pressure me. "Dad said a lawyer could help us stay once we got inside," she whispered.

Mom snapped. "You needed somewhere to live!"

Paige looked at her. "Then why didn’t you offer me your guest room?"

Silence. My parents lived in a spacious four-bedroom house with plenty of room. They simply preferred that I carry the inconvenience. Paige seemed to grasp that for the very first time.

She picked up Emma’s stuffed rabbit. "We’re leaving," she said quietly.

As the officers escorted them toward the elevator, my father looked into the camera. "You’ll regret turning against your family."

I held his gaze. "I haven’t turned against my family, Dad. I’ve stopped letting them use me."

The elevator doors slid shut, and my apartment finally fell silent. Across the ocean, I realized that even though I’d protected my home, I still had years of deception to untangle.

Paige called the next morning. I nearly let it ring. For years, her name on my screen had meant another problem that required money. But this time, I answered.

"Marissa?" "Yes." "The children are okay." "I’m glad."

There was a pause. Then she said, "I’m sorry."

I waited. For once, no excuse followed.

"I really thought you’d give in," she admitted.

"Why?"

"Because you always did."

Her honesty stung, but it was better than another carefully rehearsed explanation.

"Mom kept telling me you had everything," Paige continued. "She said you bought that apartment because Grandma helped you financially."

My grip tightened on the phone. "What?"

"Dad told me you received your inheritance early."

I sat down. "I never received an inheritance."

Paige went silent. Then she told me something that made everything even worse.
