My Mom Relied on Me for Everything, Yet Her Will Leaves Me With Empty Hands

My mom has two daughters: Nora and me. When she fell seriously ill, I put my life on hold and moved in to care for her. But once she recovered, she told me I should start paying rent for living in her house.

Then she said something that cut deep: “You know what Nora did? She sends me money every month, while you just ate and lived here for free!”

That alone stung, but it didn’t stop there. Later, Nora admitted that Mom had secretly rewritten her will, leaving the entire house to her. Apparently, it was a deal: Nora gave Mom $500 a month, and in return, Mom promised her everything. Nora confessed it didn’t feel right and thought I deserved to know.

I was crushed. I had been there physically, emotionally, and mentally, doing everything I could while Mom was sick—yet it seemed she valued money over care. It made me feel like all my love and effort meant nothing. So, I decided to take a bold step.

Two days later, I told Mom I’d spoken with a lawyer. Nora agreed to sell the house and split the proceeds fairly. I calmly explained to Mom that she’d have a month to find a new place to live.

She didn’t respond at first. Then she broke down crying and said we had both betrayed her.

Now I’m left with this heavy feeling. Did I go too far? Or was I simply standing up for myself after being overlooked and hurt?
