My MIL Brought 38 Friends to My Restaurant and Ordered $23,289 Worth of Food—Then I Placed a Folder Before Her.

Part 1: Treat of the Century

For illustrative purposes only

“Come in, ladies, don’t be shy. My daughter-in-law’s restaurant is practically family. Today we are eating like queens, and I am paying for everything!”

Beatrice’s booming voice rang through the dining room at 1:30 in the afternoon, just as my restaurant was filled with customers. Behind her marched thirty-eight immaculately groomed women, clutching expensive handbags, drenched in strong perfume, and radiating the confidence of people certain that somebody else would settle the bill.

Gavin, my head manager, rushed over to me looking panicked.

“Camilla, they do not have a reservation, and every single table is completely occupied. Should I tell them that we cannot accommodate such a large group right now?”

I glanced at Beatrice, who was already pulling a “reserved” sign off a large table and ordering the busboys to push several chairs together.

“No, Gavin,” I replied calmly. “Take care of them.”

Gavin’s eyes widened in total disbelief.

“To all thirty-nine of them?”

“To all of them, and make sure you give them exactly what they ask for.”

He did not understand my decision, and honestly, nobody else in the building did either. But deep down I knew that today would be the very last day Beatrice ever set foot in my restaurant believing she owned something she had never helped build.

I had built Lumina, my prized fine-dining restaurant in San Diego, after years of relentless work as a line cook, then a sous-chef, and finally an executive chef. I had saved every penny for the initial investment, chosen the commercial ovens myself, hired the staff, created the seasonal menus, and spent sleepless nights calculating precise food costs.

Lucas, my husband, had never put a single dollar of his own money into the business. Yet Beatrice always told everyone she met a completely different story.

“My son set her up in business, you know,” she would boast proudly to her social circle. “Camilla just handles the cooking.”

For years, she had strolled in without a reservation, ordered prime cuts of steak, fresh seafood, expensive desserts, and fine wine, and then left without paying a dime. Whenever I complained to my husband, Lucas gave me the same frustrating excuse.

“She is my mother, Camilla,” he would say with a shrug. “Besides, she gives you free publicity, so do not be so dramatic over a few thousand dollars.”

My biggest mistake was staying quiet for far too long, but on this particular Friday afternoon, Beatrice decided to test exactly how far my patience would stretch.

“I want the most expensive tasting menu for everyone here,” she demanded loudly to the server. “And open the reserve bottles of wine from the cellar, so make sure nothing cheap touches this table.”

Her friends applauded her generosity enthusiastically.

“How incredibly generous you are, Beatrice!”

“Well, that is the beauty of having a luxury restaurant in the family,” she replied, glancing at me with a triumphant smirk.

A banquet of this scale could easily cost more than twenty thousand dollars.

Gavin caught me in the hallway once more, deeply worried.

“Camilla, we can still put a stop to this right now before it goes any further.”

“No, Gavin, let them order and serve everything they want.”

Beatrice took her seat at the head of the private dining room and promptly began playing the supreme hostess. Pan-seared scallops, fresh tuna tartare, artisan flatbreads, prime ribeyes, rich sauces, and the finest vintage wines soon covered their table.

I even carried over one of our best reserves myself and poured it personally.

Beatrice watched me with condescension as I filled the crystal glasses around the table.

“Just look at that, ladies,” she announced to the crowd. “The great executive chef also knows how to wait on tables when required.”

Several of the women snickered behind their napkins.

“She cooks wonderfully,” one woman remarked quietly, “but she seems a bit too simple for someone who runs a place like this.”

Beatrice took a slow sip of her wine before answering.

“Camilla has always been like this, but she is excellent at her labor, which is why you keep her around.”

I gripped the neck of the bottle tightly, but I forced myself to keep smiling.

Then one of her wealthy friends leaned forward with a sudden question.

“And where is Lucas today? I have not seen him around in a very long time.”

Beatrice leaned in close, looking eager, as though she were about to share the juiciest gossip of the year.

“My son is doing better than ever, and he even has a lovely young woman on the side who adores him.”

The whole table fell silent, and I froze behind her chair.

Beatrice burst into loud laughter at their shocked expressions.

“Oh, do not make those faces, because Camilla is never home anyway since she lives in this kitchen, and besides, Lucas knows how to enjoy his life.”

Another woman gazed around the lavish room and asked with curiosity.

“And with what money is he funding all this fun?”

Beatrice lifted her glass high, utterly confident.

“With money from this restaurant, of course, because in the end, it all stays right here in the family.”

I stood behind her, completely motionless.

For the past three months, I had been secretly investigating strange, unauthorized withdrawals from my commercial business account. There were receipts for luxury hotels, designer gifts, wire transfers, and huge personal debts that Lucas had never explained to me. But until that very moment, I had not realized something far worse: Beatrice knew all about her son’s infidelity, and she knew exactly where the stolen money was coming from.

As I stood there pouring wine for thirty-eight snobbish women, a plan was already taking shape in my mind, one that would shatter the pathetic lie I had been living with for years.
