My Husband Tried Taking Our Newborn—Then My Deaf Uncle’s Military Lighter Made My Billionaire Father-in-Law Turn Pale

Part 3: The Phone That Rang in the Hallway

Grant stood at my bedside with the phone pressed to his ear, waiting for Judge Marsh to pick up. He truly believed one call would be enough to tear my son out of my arms.

Richard had retreated to the window, still gray from the moment he’d recognized Gus’s dog tag. For the first time since I’d married into the family, neither Whitmore looked at ease in a room.

“You’re going to regret this,” Grant told me. “Once Judge Marsh hears how unstable you’ve been, Noah’s coming home with me.”

I held my son closer.

“He’s five hours old, Grant. He isn’t going anywhere without me.”

He laughed.

“You still don’t get how things work in this family.”

The line kept ringing.

Out in the hallway, the second ringtone kept time with it, ring for ring.

Richard glanced at the door.

“Son,” he said quietly, “maybe you should hang up.”

Grant flicked a hand at him.

“Not now, Dad.”

The footsteps grew louder.

Then the door swung open.

An elegant woman in her early sixties stepped inside, her silver hair swept into a low knot, wearing a charcoal blazer over a plum dress. In one hand she held a phone, its screen glowing with an incoming call.

Behind her came Detective Callahan, whom I’d met three weeks earlier, along with two uniformed officers.

Grant’s smile faded.

“Judge Marsh?”

The woman glanced down at her screen, then up at him.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

She pressed decline.

The ringing stopped in both places at once.

Grant lowered his phone.

“What are you doing here?”

Judge Marsh’s face stayed perfectly composed.

“I’m told you’ve been trying to influence a custody matter through personal relationships.”

Grant swallowed hard.

“No, I was just calling to explain a family emergency.”

“Custody is decided in a courtroom, Mr. Whitmore. Not over private phone calls.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Eleanor, let’s be reasonable. Our families have known each other for decades.”

She turned to him.

“Mr. Whitmore, your personal history with me has no bearing on this investigation.”

Detective Callahan came to my side.

“Claire, are you and the baby okay?”

I nodded, though my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

“Grant tried to take him. He threatened me again.”

“I know. Your advocate called us, and hospital security has already preserved the hallway footage.”

Grant shook his head.

“This is insane! My wife just gave birth. She’s exhausted. She’s imagining things.”

Callahan pulled out a tablet.

“Then maybe you’d like to explain the recordings you were already given a chance to respond to.”

She tapped the screen.

Grant’s voice filled the room.

“Sign the papers once the baby’s born, or I’ll make sure no judge ever lets you near him.”

My husband stared at the tablet.

Callahan stopped the clip and opened another.

This time it was Richard.

“Make her look unstable. Get the family attorney on it. We need custody locked down before she figures out what’s happening.”

Richard gripped the back of a chair.

“That was a private conversation.”

“It was part of the evidence voluntarily turned over to investigators,” Callahan said. “Along with the texts you sent your son.”

Grant spun toward me.

For illustration purposes only

“You’ve been recording us?”

“Yes,” I said. “Because nobody believed me when I tried to tell them.”

His face darkened.

“You had no right!”

I touched the bruises above my gown.

“And you had no right to put your hand around my throat.”

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Then Grant turned desperately to the judge.

“Eleanor, you know my father. You know us. You can’t let her blow up everything over a marital spat.”

Judge Marsh’s expression hardened.

“Mr. Whitmore, I strongly suggest you stop talking about this case as if your bank account buys you special treatment.”

Callahan stepped forward.

“Grant Whitmore, we have a warrant for your arrest.”

His face went completely blank.

“A warrant?”

“For charges arising from the documented assaults and threats against your wife.”

Grant backed toward the wall.

“No. My lawyers will get this tossed in an hour.”

Then he lunged past the officers toward my bed, shouting my name, and both of them caught him by the arms and pinned him back against the curtain rail.

“You can call counsel once the arrest is complete,” Callahan said.

Richard sank into the chair by the window and pressed a hand over his eyes.

For the first time, Grant looked at me without that old certainty that he could scare me into silence.

But Richard wasn’t finished.

He pushed himself up, straightened his jacket, and jabbed a finger at the detective.

“You people have no idea what you’ve started. I have friends in every office in this state, and I’ll use every one of them.”

Gus, who had been standing quietly beside Noah’s bassinet, finally turned.

“Richard,” he said, “that’s word for word what you told the inspector general the last time you thought nobody could touch you.”

My father-in-law went silent.

Then Detective Callahan opened a second folder.

“Mr. Whitmore, before you go anywhere, you should know about the financial investigation involving your family’s attorney.”

Richard stared at the papers in her hand.

And the terror that returned to his face was even worse than when he’d first seen Gus’s dog tag.
