My Husband Kicked Me Out With Our Two Kids for His Mistress—But He Had No Idea I’d Just Inherited $24 Million and Owned His House

Part 3: Pearls, Lies, and a $180,000 Secret

I opened my handbag and took out the certified deed.

“This property belongs to the Prescott Family Trust, Derek. My aunt established it, and I’m the sole beneficiary.”

His smile slipped.

“That’s ridiculous. I make the mortgage payments.”

“You pay rent under a lease you personally signed. No mortgage has ever been registered in your name for this property.”

He grabbed the document and started reading.

Slowly, the color drained from his face.

“This has to be some kind of mistake.”

“You’re welcome to verify the deed through the Greenwich land records. Margaret Ellis’s contact information is included.”

Chloe leaned over his shoulder.

“Derek, what does she mean? You told me this house was completely paid off and registered in your name.”

He shot her a glare.

“It is my house!”

I pulled the lease from my folder.

“Then perhaps you should explain why your signature appears on an agreement identifying you as a tenant.”

For the first time, neither of them had a reply.

Derek flipped through the lease with growing panic.

He had obviously assumed it was routine mortgage paperwork when he signed it.

The purchase option appeared several pages in, along with conditions that had never been met.

“I paid every month!” he protested.

“You paid the property-management company. The trust received your rent. Those payments didn’t transfer ownership.”

Chloe’s eyes darted from Derek to me.

“You told me she was dependent on you for everything.”

I ignored her for the moment and turned to the section on occupancy.

The agreement barred unauthorized permanent residents and prohibited interfering with the beneficiary’s authorized access.

Margaret had explained that any breach would have to be handled through proper notice and legal procedure.

“The trust’s attorney will be reviewing whether you’ve violated this agreement,” I told Derek. “You cannot simply lock me out and move another person in because you’ve decided our marriage is over.”

“You’re threatening to evict your own husband?”

“I’m telling you that you have no authority to remove me or the children from a property you don’t own.”

Suddenly Chloe took a keen interest in the papers.

“Derek, you promised me we’d live here together. You said Emma would have no choice but to leave.”

“Stop talking, Chloe.”

I turned to face her.

“Before we discuss anything else, I want my grandmother’s earrings back.”

Her hand shot up to her ear.

“Derek gave them to me. He said they belonged to his mother.”

Derek’s mother had died six years earlier.

I knew she had never owned those pearls.

They had come down through my grandmother’s family and were among the few things I would never willingly part with.

“Those earrings are mine, Chloe. They were never Derek’s to give away.”

She looked at him.

He stayed silent.

With shaking fingers, she unhooked the earrings and dropped them into my open palm.

“He told me you barely worked, that you spent his money, and that he was the only reason your family had a decent home.”

I gently slipped the pearls back into their little pouch.

“I’ve edited medical manuscripts for years, often working through the night to support his business. But you don’t need to take my word for it. You’re already discovering how reliable Derek’s stories are.”

Chloe edged away from him.

Derek reached for her hand.

She stepped back.

I still had one last document to show him.

It concerned his company.

And unlike the house, it was a debt he couldn’t just walk away from.

Eleven years earlier, Derek had borrowed $180,000 to launch his consulting firm.

He’d told me a private lender had put up the money based on his business plan.

I remembered celebrating the night the loan was approved.

Derek had treated that financing as proof of his remarkable business talent.

That morning, Margaret had shown me a very different story.

Eleanor had personally guaranteed the credit arrangement and quietly stepped in with financial support whenever Derek couldn’t meet his obligations.

I took out the loan records.

“Do you remember the lender who helped you start the company?”

Derek swallowed hard.

“Of course. It was handled through a financial institution.”

“Eleanor was the guarantor. She intervened four separate times when your business couldn’t make its payments.”

He stared at me.

“That’s impossible.”

“Her estate records identify each intervention. She helped preserve your company without asking you to acknowledge her involvement.”

I handed him the papers documenting the outstanding debt and its assignment.

Margaret had explained that the rights now managed for my benefit included the enforceable obligations tied to that financing.

“The estate’s attorneys are reviewing the loan, and I now control the creditor interest your company must address.”

Derek clutched the paperwork.

“You’re saying your aunt was funding my business?”

“She was helping keep it alive. You told me your success came entirely from your own efforts while criticizing me for not contributing enough.”

For several long moments, nobody said a word.
