Part 2: The Message He Never Answered
Two days later, Ben asked to meet without Diane.
I agreed because I wanted facts.
I brought a notebook.
He noticed it immediately.
“What’s that?”
“The part where I stop relying on whatever version you decide to give me.”
“Ask me anything, Liza. Anything.”
“What exactly did Claire say?”
“She wanted to meet me.”
“I want the message.”
His face tightened.
“I haven’t looked at it in years.”
“Did Diane know?”
“Yes.”
“Then show me.”
“I don’t think it’ll help.”
“Then why are you afraid of me seeing it?”
That stopped him.
Ben signed into an old email account and found the exchange.
Claire’s message was short.
She didn’t want money. She wanted to know where she came from and whether he’d meet her once.
I looked up.
“She made it easy for you.”
Ben swallowed.
“I was scared.”
Then I saw the reply beneath it.
From him.
“I think it’s better if we leave the past where it is. I can’t be the father you’re looking for, Claire.”
I looked at Ben.
“You told me you didn’t answer.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because saying I ignored her sounded less cruel than admitting I rejected her.”
There it was. His choice.
“You weren’t 20 anymore.”
“No.”
“You were married to me. We were trying for a baby, Ben. How was any of this okay?”
His eyes filled.
“While I was grieving the child we couldn’t have, Claire was asking her father to meet her.”
Ben looked down.
“And you told her to stay in the past.”
“I did.”
I handed back his phone.
He hadn’t repeated a youthful mistake. He’d chosen it again.
The following week, I sought advice about separation, finances, and what decisions Ben and I would need to make for Evie.
That afternoon, Diane showed up at my parents’ house.
She stood on the porch.
“I saved him, Liza.”
“From what?”
“He was young. He had his whole life ahead of him.”
“So did Claire. And her mother.”
“You weren’t there.”
“And apparently I wasn’t allowed to know later either.”
“Claire had her mother.”
“And Ben was her father.”
“Why destroy your family over something that happened 18 years ago?”

“Because Claire contacted him four years ago. And you knew.”
Diane went still.
“I was protecting my son.”
“You protected him from consequences.”
“We did what we thought was best.”
“You did what was easiest for Ben and called it best for everyone else.”
“I won’t let you keep Evelyn from us.”
“You don’t get to dictate what happens next. You helped Ben hide Claire from me for years.”
Diane looked away.
“If you’d told me, I would’ve respected whatever Claire wanted. Instead, you treated her like something to hide and never gave me a choice.”
She left.
That evening, Ben called.
“I want to contact Claire, Liza.”
