My Husband Chose His Mistress and Walked Away—But at His First Appointment Alone, One Truth Turned His Freedom Into a Nightmare

PART 2

At seven thirty the next morning, I woke with a sudden jolt of adrenaline.

My body was automatically reacting, braced to hear Ronald’s early morning alarm for his first dose.

The room was completely silent.

Samantha had already put out fresh coffee, toasted bread, and sliced fruit in the kitchen.

“Did you manage to sleep well last night, Mom?” Samantha asked softly, handing me a mug.

I looked down at the warm cup resting between my palms.

“I think this is the very first time in twenty years that I slept through the night without listening for someone else’s breathing,” I admitted.

A short while later, my phone rang with a call from the specialty pharmacy coordinator.

The head pharmacist, who had worked with me for years, spoke with extreme caution over the line.

“Florence, a young woman came into the pharmacy this morning claiming that she will be taking over the pickup for Ronald’s medication from now on,” the pharmacist explained.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

“That would be Sabrina,” I said calmly.

“I figured as much, but when I tried to explain the strict administration schedules and critical precautions to her, she told me that Ronald assured her these pills were practically just high-strength vitamins,” the pharmacist reported in shock.

I stood frozen by the kitchen counter.

Ronald had blatantly lied to her about the severity of his condition.

To win her affection, he had turned a life-threatening chronic disease into a minor inconvenience.

“We are officially divorced now, so please give all necessary instructions directly to Ronald and let him manage his own administrative updates,” I told her firmly.

The pharmacist paused before speaking again.

“Well, he is about to find out just how much you were actually doing for him every single day,” she remarked before ending the call.

Later that afternoon, the clinical social worker who had helped me with complex insurance paperwork for years called my phone.

She mentioned that the renewal for his high-cost specialty treatment was about to expire and several clinical forms were missing.

I knew every requirement for that file by heart.

Ronald likely didn’t even know the administrative procedure existed in the first place.

But this time, I didn’t rush over to the clinic.

I didn’t print out any clinical statements.

I didn’t request any updated medical certificates.

I didn’t make a single phone call to his physicians.

By four in the afternoon, I got a harsh text from his sister, Gertrude.

“Abandoning a sick man when you are a trained nurse shows everyone what kind of heartless woman you truly are,” Gertrude wrote.

For five furious minutes, my fingers hovered over the screen as I typed out a long reply detailing her hypocrisy.

I vividly remembered a night years earlier when Ronald had a severe flare-up and I begged Gertrude to watch him for three hours so I could cover a mandatory hospital shift.

“You are the nurse in this family, so you fix it,” Gertrude had snapped back then before hanging up on me.

I deleted my draft entirely.

I blocked her number without saying a word.

Meanwhile, Ronald was just starting to run into the reality of his new independent life.

He couldn’t find his pre-sorted medication organizer on the counter.

He had no idea which pill he was supposed to take before breakfast.

He couldn’t locate his recent lab results anywhere in the living room.

And Sabrina simply wanted to sleep in without dealing with his confusion.

“Florence was just exaggerating everything to make herself seem important,” Ronald insisted to Sabrina as he tried to calm his rising anxiety.

Two days later, the two of them arrived at the medical center for his routine consultation.

Ronald expected to walk into the office, greet the specialist, collect a fresh stack of prescriptions, and leave within five minutes to enjoy an expensive brunch with Sabrina.

The very first obstacle appeared at the front reception desk.

“Sir, your pre-authorization for the specialty therapy has expired, and we require the updated medical report requested by your insurance provider before we can proceed,” the receptionist stated politely.

“Just pull it up in your digital database because I have been coming to this clinic for years,” Ronald demanded impatiently.

“Your general medical history is right here, but the new administrative authorization file is completely missing,” the receptionist clarified.

A wave of nervousness washed over Ronald.

An hour later, he was called into the examination room, where Dr. Harrison sat waiting with his file open.

“What exact time did you take your morning dose of pyridostigmine today?” Dr. Harrison asked directly, without looking up.

Ronald sat in complete silence for a few seconds.

“I actually did not take it this morning,” Ronald admitted reluctantly.

The physician raised his eyes from the chart.

“And why did you skip such a critical dose?” Dr. Harrison questioned sharply.

“There was a slight confusion at the specialty pharmacy, but missing a single day cannot possibly be that important,” Ronald claimed smoothly.

The doctor’s calm expression turned stern.

“Are those frequent episodes of muscle weakness in your right hand still occurring?” Dr. Harrison inquired further.

Ronald frowned in confusion.

“I have never experienced any hand weakness,” Ronald insisted.

The physician opened the dark blue notebook lying on his desk.

“Your ex-wife recorded three distinct episodes of right-hand weakness last week alone,” Dr. Harrison noted aloud.

Sabrina turned in her chair to stare at Ronald.

“What hand episodes are you talking about, Ronald?” Sabrina asked sharply.

The doctor kept reading from my notes.

“She also documented visible speech difficulty after nine in the evening along with two separate instances of shallow night breathing,” Dr. Harrison stated clearly.

“Ronald, you literally told me that you were practically fully recovered from this condition,” Sabrina said, her voice rising in anger.

Ronald’s face went completely pale under the bright clinical lighting.

The physician closed the logbook with a firm thud.

“Mr. Ronald, you honestly believe your condition has been effortless because someone else made it look effortless for twenty straight years,” Dr. Harrison remarked with disappointment.

Then the physician delivered the line that completely shattered Ronald’s elaborate lie.

“You have not been managing this disease for twenty years, because Florence was the one managing every single aspect of it,” Dr. Harrison declared directly.

Sabrina slowly pulled her hand away from Ronald’s grasp.

But the doctor wasn’t finished addressing the situation.

He pulled up the latest lab results on his computer screen and took a deep breath.

“Furthermore, there is a serious trend in your recent blood work that we must address right now,” Dr. Harrison warned.

Ronald stopped smiling entirely.

What he heard over the next ten minutes would forever wreck his naive idea of the freedom he had so arrogantly celebrated.
