Part 2: The Brother They Never Expected
An eerie silence settled over the kitchen, broken only by my ragged breathing and the sharp hiss of oil smoking in the cast-iron pan on the stove. Trent stayed frozen with the stick raised above his head, staring at the wreckage of my phone, where a tiny green light kept blinking through the cracked screen.
“Did she… did she actually call someone?” Helen asked, her confidence suddenly giving way to unease.
Nicole looked down at her own phone, then back at Trent.
“It was her brother,” she whispered. “The notification says the audio was delivered to Alex.”
For the first time since I had known him, Trent looked scared instead of angry. He let go of my hair, paced the kitchen with the stick still in his fist, and barked orders at everyone.

“Close the blinds! Richard, lock every door!”
Richard hurried toward the entrance without a word, while Helen tried desperately to take back control of the situation.
“You’re going to tell whoever shows up that you slipped down the stairs,” she snapped. “You’re clumsy, you’re pregnant, and that’s exactly what happened.”
I slowly shook my head.
“I won’t.”
Trent knelt beside me at once and aimed the stick at my stomach.
“You’ll smile when Alex gets here,” he hissed. “You’ll tell him this was pregnancy hormones. If you don’t, the second he leaves, I’ll make sure you never walk again.”
I pressed my cheek to the cold floor and forced myself to stay conscious while my daughter fluttered weakly inside me. As long as she was still fighting, I couldn’t let myself give up.
Nicole suddenly peeked through the blinds.
“Someone’s outside,” she whispered nervously. “A black truck just stopped at the end of the driveway.”
“Turn off every light,” Trent ordered immediately. “Make the house look empty.”
Richard reached for the wall switch.
Before his fingers touched it, every light in the house went out.
A loud thud sounded outside as the power was cut completely. The refrigerator went quiet, the oven display disappeared, and the whole house sank into darkness.
“What did you do?” Helen screamed.
“Shut up!” Trent snapped. “Everybody grab a knife!”
Lying motionless on the floor, I knew exactly what had happened. Alex hadn’t wasted time knocking at the front door. He had gone straight to the breaker box, stripping away the only advantage they thought they had.
For several long seconds no one moved. The only sounds left were the bubbling oil on the stove and my own unsteady breathing.
Then something shattered.
It wasn’t the front door.
It was the enormous glass patio doors at the back of the house.
The deafening crash echoed through the dark before slow, deliberate footsteps began crunching over broken glass toward the kitchen.
“Trent…” Nicole whimpered. “I’m scared.”
Trent clutched a chef’s knife with shaking hands.
“Whoever you are, I’m armed! Stay back!”
A brilliant tactical flashlight suddenly cut through the darkness. Its beam swept over Helen crouched behind the island, Richard gripping a decorative vase, Nicole trembling against the wall, and finally came to rest on me, lying on the floor with one arm wrapped protectively around my stomach.
The light slowly lifted.
Alex stood in the doorway.
He filled the entrance like an immovable wall, dressed in dark clothing, a heavy steel wrench in one hand. His expression never changed as his eyes took in every detail: the smoking pan, the bloody bruises covering my body, and the wooden stick lying beside Trent.
Richard tried to step forward.
“This is private family business,” he shouted. “You’re trespassing!”
Alex didn’t waste a word.
He swung the flashlight once.
The metal caught Richard squarely on the jaw and sent him crashing unconscious to the kitchen floor before anyone understood what had happened.
Helen screamed.
Trent panicked, tossing aside the wooden stick and snatching up the biggest knife he could find.
“Stay back!” he yelled. “I’ll kill you!”
Alex never slowed.
He slipped inside Trent’s reach, caught his wrist, and twisted sharply upward. A loud crack filled the room as the knife clattered harmlessly across the floor. In one smooth motion Alex swept Trent’s legs out from under him, drove him flat onto the tiles, and pinned him there.
Gripping Trent by the throat, Alex leaned in so that only the two of them could hear.
“If you ever look at my sister again,” he said quietly, “I’ll tear you apart with my bare hands. Blink if you understand.”
Trent’s face went purple as tears streamed down his cheeks.
He blinked frantically.
Alex shoved him aside in complete disgust and dropped to his knees beside me. The soldier vanished, replaced by the older brother who had protected me my whole life.
“Chloe,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “Look at me. I’m here now.”
Fresh tears filled my eyes.
“Alex… I can’t feel the baby moving anymore.”
Fear flashed across his face faster than I had ever seen. He grabbed his phone and dialed emergency services.
“I need an ambulance and multiple police units immediately,” he ordered. “Pregnant victim, aggravated assault, domestic violence. Hurry.”
While everyone else watched Alex, I caught a movement at the edge of my vision.
Nicole.
She had quietly crept toward the kitchen island and reached under the refrigerator for my shattered phone. Then she looked at the pan of boiling oil still sitting over the open flame.
She wasn’t trying to save herself.
She was trying to destroy the evidence.
