The Man Who Never Asked Me to Forget
Two years after that Christmas, I met Dr. Miles Calloway at a children’s charity event in Denver.
Miles was a pediatric physician with a quiet sense of humor and almost unreasonable patience. He knew about Grant. He knew about the Ashfords. He knew I had spent years teaching myself never to depend on anyone.
He never tried to compete with my past. He simply showed up.
When Mason had a science competition, Miles came. When Reid needed help with a solar-system model, Miles stayed until midnight. When Owen became nervous before a school performance, Miles sat in the front row.
And when Carter finally asked him the question I knew would eventually come, Miles did not pretend the answer was simple.
“Are you going to leave too?”
Miles set down his coffee.
“I cannot prove the future with a speech, Carter. But I can keep showing up when I say I will, and you can decide what that means over time.”
Carter actually made a chart.
Miles never missed a box.
