My Ex Humiliated Me at an Academic Competition—Then My Twin Daughters Stepped Forward to Claim Their Gold Medals

PART 2: Everything Falls

Marianne leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Did you really think it was a coincidence that the primary sponsor of this global intellectual tournament was Vance Dominion? Or that the final challenge presented to the contestants tonight was a proprietary encryption code your engineers spent five years failing to crack?”

A wave of cold sweat broke across my back. The final challenge… the impossible mathematical puzzle that Chloe and Sophie had solved in less than eleven minutes, shattering the tournament’s all-time record.

“Chloe and Sophie didn’t just win a trophy tonight, Adrian,” Marianne went on, a small, terrifying smile touching her lips. “By cracking that live network on national television, they executed a public decryption key. The dossier Chloe just put in her backpack contains the complete, unredacted audit of your corporate assets, proving that every core technology Vance Dominion owns was built on intellectual property legally registered to Hartwell Biometrics.”

Before I could grasp the sheer scale of the trap, heavy footsteps rang down the marble corridor.

“Adrian!”

Cordelia came striding around the corner, her face red, her diamonds flashing under the harsh fluorescent lights. Penelope stumbled behind her, sniffling and clutching a worthless participation ribbon.

“I called our legal team!” Cordelia shrieked, jabbing an accusatory, manicured finger at Marianne and the twins. “I don’t care who these street rats are! They cheated! They humiliated my daughter! I will sue this entire foundation, and I will have these nobodies thrown in—”

“Shut up, Cordelia,” I commanded, but my voice had lost all its power.

Cordelia gasped, turning her rage on me. “How dare you?! I made you, Adrian! My father’s money made you! You are nothing without the Vance name!”

“Actually,” Sophie interjected calmly, drawing a slim metallic tablet from her jacket, “according to the SEC filing that was automatically triggered three minutes ago when the decryption completed, Mr. Vance is about to be very much broke. And so are you, Mrs. Vance.”

Cordelia blinked, her rage instantly dissolving into profound confusion. “What is this trash talking about?”

“She’s talking about the law, Cordelia,” Marianne said, stepping fully into the light. She regarded Cordelia not with malice, but with pity. “Adrian didn’t marry you because he loved you, or even because he cared about your father’s money. He married you because he needed a corporate shield to hide the fact that he was laundering my patents through your family’s holding companies.”

“You’re lying!” Cordelia yelled, though her voice wobbled as she looked at my pale, silent face. “Adrian! Tell this woman she’s crazy! Tell her!”

I couldn’t speak. My mouth felt full of ash.

For thirteen years, I had convinced myself that I was the master architect of my own destiny. I had abandoned Marianne, believing she was an anchor dragging at my ambition. I had put up with Cordelia’s grotesque arrogance and Penelope’s profound incompetence because I believed the illusion of power was worth the soul-crushing quiet of my life.

I had traded gold for brass.

“The board of directors has already been notified,” Chloe stated smoothly, tapping her tablet. “Federal regulators were patched into the live stream the moment the system unlocked. The Vance Dominion stock is currently down forty-two percent in after-hours trading. By tomorrow morning, the freeze on your personal assets will be finalized.”

Penelope began to wail aloud. “Mom… what does that mean? Are we still going to the Bahamas?”

“Be quiet, Penelope!” Cordelia screamed, though her eyes darted frantically around the hallway as if searching for an escape hatch. She clutched my arm, shaking me violently. “Adrian, fix this! Use your security detail! Call the governor! Do something!”

I gently, lifelessly peeled her fingers off my sleeve. “There’s nothing to fix, Cordelia. It’s over.”

“You coward!” she spat, slapping me across the face with a sharp, echoing crack. “You pathetic, lying leech! You used me!”

She grabbed Penelope by the shoulder and hauled the crying girl back down the hallway, her heels clicking a furious, desperate rhythm against the marble until the double doors slammed shut behind them.

I stood alone in the hallway with the family I had destroyed. The red mark on my cheek burned, but it was nothing next to the hollow, terrifying void opening in my chest.

I looked at Chloe and Sophie. They stood shoulder to shoulder, nearly as tall as me now, carrying a quiet, dignified strength that money could never buy.

“Chloe… Sophie…” I took a heavy step toward them, tears finally spilling over, burning down my face. “I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know I am a monster in your story. But please… let me help you. Let me give you the estate, the funds, the resources you deserve. Everything I have left is yours.”

Chloe studied me, her expression unreadable. For a fleeting second, I glimpsed something human in her eyes, a momentary acknowledgment of the genetic bond that tied us together.

Then she closed her backpack, zipping it shut with a firm, final sound.

“We don’t need your charity, Mr. Vance,” Chloe said softly. “Everything we have, we earned. Everything we are, our mother gave us.”

“Please,” I sobbed, dropping to my knees right there on the cold marble floor. The powerful, untouchable Adrian Vance, reduced to a weeping beggar in an Italian suit. “Don’t leave me with nothing.”
