My 6-Year-Old Cried in Pain During Bath Time—Then the Doctor Asked Me a Terrifying Question

Part 2: What Rachel Hid

When the detective asked whether my husband had put any electronic devices in our daughter’s bedroom, I thought right away of the cloud-shaped night-light he’d bought a month earlier. Daniel had insisted it was perfectly safe, but now investigators wanted to examine it.

I sat in my best friend’s kitchen, gripping the phone with shaking hands.

“Do you think someone was watching Lily?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet, Mrs. Carter,” Detective Harris replied. “Please let us examine the device before we draw conclusions.”

That afternoon, investigators entered our home with the necessary legal authorization. Lily and I stayed at Rachel’s house, where I tried to keep her busy with coloring books and her favorite animated movies.

Every few minutes, I checked my phone.

Shortly after six, Detective Harris called.

“Emily, we’ve examined the night-light.”

I stood up at once.

“What did you find?”

“The device appears to contain an extra camera component that wasn’t part of the manufacturer’s original design.”

My knees weakened.

“Daniel told me it only monitored temperature.”

“We’re documenting everything and arranging a forensic examination. We can’t yet say how the component was used.”

I clutched the kitchen counter.

The thought that someone might have secretly watched my daughter in her bedroom made me physically ill.

“Have you spoken to Daniel?”

“Not yet. We’re working on it.”

The detective explained that investigators had also found records suggesting the device had been accessed remotely. Some of the connections seemed to be linked to equipment at Daniel’s office.

I thought of his frequent business trips and the nights he claimed to be working late.

Had he been watching our home while I believed he was in meetings?

I didn’t know, and the uncertainty was unbearable.

Before ending the call, Detective Harris reminded me not to discuss the investigation with Lily or ask her about the device.

I promised I wouldn’t.

When I turned around, Lily was standing in the kitchen doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Mommy?”

I quickly tucked my phone away.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She glanced down the hallway before coming closer.

Then she whispered something I will never forget.

“Daddy said the cloud was watching.”

My chest tightened.

I wanted to ask what she meant, but I remembered the detective’s instructions.

Instead, I knelt and opened my arms.

Lily stepped into them.

“You can always tell me when something makes you uncomfortable,” I said softly. “You never have to keep scary secrets.”

She hugged me tightly.

I reported her exact words to Detective Harris without asking her anything more.

The next afternoon, Lily had an appointment with a trained child forensic interviewer.

I waited outside with Rachel, staring at the clock while my daughter talked with the specialist in a private, child-friendly room.

When Lily came out, she reached for my hand right away.

I hugged her and took her home without asking what she’d said.

Later, Detective Harris contacted me.

“We’re continuing the investigation,” she said. “We also need information about other properties your husband might use.”

I mentioned an executive apartment his company kept downtown and a vacation house owned by Daniel’s father.

The detective wrote down both addresses.

That evening, Daniel stopped calling.

At first, I felt relieved.

Then the silence began to scare me.

At nine o’clock, Detective Harris called again.

“Emily, are you still staying with Rachel?”

“Yes. Why?”

“We tried to reach your husband, but he wasn’t at the family home.”

My heart began to pound.

“Where is he?”

“We haven’t located him yet. Please stay somewhere safe and contact us immediately if he approaches.”

I looked toward the living room, where Lily was quietly drawing.

“Do you think he’s coming here?”

“We have no information suggesting that. We’re taking precautions.”

Rachel checked the doors while I sat beside my daughter, trying not to let her see my fear.

At 10:06 p.m., my phone buzzed.

An unfamiliar number had sent a message.

You have no idea what you’re doing.

I forwarded it to Detective Harris immediately.

Another message appeared.

You’re destroying our family over something you don’t understand.

Then a third.

Call me before this goes too far.

Rachel read them over my shoulder.

“Don’t respond,” she said.

I nodded.

But the fourth message was different.

Ask Rachel why she’s helping you.

I turned to my friend.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Rachel, what does that mean?”

She looked away.

“Emily, there’s something I should have told you earlier.”

My stomach clenched.

“What?”

She sat down across from me.

“Three months ago, Daniel contacted me privately. He wanted legal advice about recording devices inside a family home.”

I stared at her.

And suddenly, I realized my husband might have been planning something long before Lily ever complained of pain.
