I Raised and Adopted My Sister’s Newborn Triplets After She Disappeared With Her Boyfriend—20 Years Later, She Suddenly Showed Up at Their Wedding

Part 4 — Three Brides, One Impossible Wedding

Life has a strange sense of humor.

June grew up and fell in love with Ben.

Ava met Ben’s brother Luke at a barbecue.

Months later, Claire met their youngest brother, Sam.

When the third engagement happened, I stared at the girls and said,

“You three have found the only possible way to make weddings even more complicated.”

They laughed.

Then they announced they wanted to get married on the same day.

I nearly had a heart attack.

What followed was months of flowers, dresses, seating charts, arguments about food, laughter, stress, and three daughters repeatedly reminding me that everything was under control.

Nothing was under control.

But it was beautiful.

On the wedding day, I stood outside the ceremony with all three of them.

June was first.

She slipped her hand through my arm.

“You’re crying already.”

“I have allergies.”

“In November?”

“Extremely seasonal allergies.”

She laughed and kissed my cheek.

Then I walked her down the aisle.

At the front, before releasing my arm, she squeezed my hand.

“Love you, Dad.”

I almost lost whatever dignity I had left.

Then came Ava.

Then Claire.

Three walks.

Three daughters.

Three moments when I had to let go of the tiny hands I once held in a hospital room and place them into the hands of men who loved them.

By the reception, I was emotionally exhausted.

But happy.

Deeply happy.

For the first time in years, I thought maybe the hardest parts of our story were behind us.

Then I saw her.

A woman sat near the back of the reception hall.

Silver threaded through her dark hair.

Her face was thinner.

Older.

But twenty years could not erase what I knew.

Vanessa.

She held a handkerchief against her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

For one ridiculous second, I wondered if grief could create hallucinations.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Rick.”

I crossed the room before I had time to think.

She stood.

“What are you doing here?”

My voice came out low because my daughters were somewhere nearby.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Please.”

“Please what?”

“You don’t understand.”

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Twenty years, Vanessa.”

She flinched.

“You had twenty years to make me understand.”

She reached toward my arm.

I stepped back.

“Not one call. Not one birthday. Not when June broke her arm. Not when Claire was sick. You didn’t even ask whether they were alive.”

“Rick, I tried.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

Her voice broke.

“I tried to come back.”

Before I could demand an explanation, the microphone screeched across the room.

Every head turned.

June, Ava, and Claire were standing together on the small stage.

All three were looking at us.

Then June lifted her glass.

“We planned a toast for Dad.”

Applause erupted.

I couldn’t move.
