I Let a Homeless Runaway Boy Sleep at My Gas Station for Two Winters—Then My Manager Fired Me as a Thief

Part 2: Nine Boxes on the Lawn

Another six years slipped past. I made what money I could cleaning motel rooms while my health declined. The physical work grew harder, and keeping up with the rent became a constant fight.

Last autumn, a new landlord bought my duplex. It was Doug Pruitt, who by then owned nearly half the block.

“Six years of late rent, Marlene,” he said with a smile as he fastened the eviction notice to my front door. “Friday. Pack your junk or the sheriff does it for you.”

On Friday morning, a sheriff’s deputy arrived with the eviction order. Doug stood next to him, arms folded, while the neighbors watched from their windows.

All I owned was crammed into nine cardboard boxes scattered across the grass. Standing among them as the neighbors looked on, I could hardly believe how little was left of my life.

“Let’s go, Marlene,” Doug said. “I’ve got painters coming at noon.”

“Okay,” I said. “Just let me get my husband’s picture off the wall.”

A red pickup stopped suddenly at the curb. A tall young man in a Duluth Fire Department jacket climbed my porch steps, passing Doug and the deputy.

“Mrs. K,” he said. “I’m so sorry it took me this long.”

It was Danny. He was no longer the scrawny teenager who had slept on my storeroom floor. He had grown into a broad-shouldered man, though tears streamed down his face. In his hands was Jesse’s old Carhartt coat.

“I need to tell you something,” he said. “And I need you to sit down first.”

The passenger door of the pickup opened, and a little girl stepped out. She had my son’s eyes.

She looked about five, with blonde curls, a pink puffy coat, and a small gap between her front teeth, just like Jesse’s. She stood below my porch, gazing up at me.

“Danny,” I whispered. “Who is she?”

Danny sat me down on a cardboard box, then drew a faded, bent photograph, taped at one corner, from the jacket’s inner pocket. It was Jesse at fifteen, grinning on the Park Point dock.

“After Doug kicked me out, I hitched to Minneapolis,” Danny said. “I slept in that jacket every night for a year. I found the photo in the pocket the first week. I kept it because I thought, if Mrs. K loves this kid this much, I’m going to find him for her.”

He wiped his face.

“I went to every shelter. Every recovery center. I showed his picture to every guy who looked like he’d been on the street a while. I did it for six years, Mrs. K. Even after I got into the fire academy. Even after I got clean myself.”

“And?” I said. I could barely breathe.

“Two months ago, I was on a medical call at a sober living house in St. Paul. A guy there saw the photo sticking out of my jacket pocket and went white.”

Danny glanced toward the truck.

“He said, ‘Where did you get my jacket?’”

The driver’s door swung open, and a thin man of twenty-seven stepped onto the street. He wore a beard I had never seen on him, but the set of his shoulders was unmistakably my husband’s. He stayed beside the pickup, looking almost too frightened to walk toward me.

“Hi, Mom,” Jesse said.
