While cleaning out one of my mother’s drawers, I came across a tiny brass object that looked like a miniature spoon.
At first, I couldn’t imagine what anyone would use it for. The scoop was far too small for food, and the handle was long, thin, and decorated with small raised rings. It looked old, carefully crafted, and definitely not something from a modern kitchen.
The more I examined it, the more curious I became.
It wasn’t a toy, not part of a dollhouse set, and it didn’t seem like jewelry either. Instead, it looked like a small tool from another era—the kind of item people once kept in grooming kits, sewing boxes, or travel cases.

After asking around and doing a bit of research, I discovered that it is most likely an old ear spoon, sometimes called an ear pick.
These small tools were once commonly used for personal grooming. The tiny scoop at the tip was designed to gently remove wax from the outer part of the ear. The long handle made it easy to hold, and the curved end helped collect wax without requiring a larger instrument.
In many parts of the world, especially in the past, ear spoons like this were quite common. Some were made of brass, others of silver, and many were included in grooming sets alongside nail cleaners, tweezers, and similar tools.
They were simple to use.
You would hold the handle and carefully use the small scoop only near the entrance of the ear. It was never meant to go deep inside. Afterward, it would be wiped clean. Because it was made of metal, it could last for years if properly washed, dried, and stored.
Some people also used similar tools to clean under their fingernails. The curved tip worked well for reaching tight spaces, and the slim handle gave better control. Before modern grooming kits became common, tools like this were part of everyday life.
There are a few other possible uses as well.
Tiny spoons like this were sometimes used to handle small amounts of powders, medicine, herbs, or cosmetics. In the past, people often kept specialized tools for specific tasks, and many objects served more than one purpose. That’s why items like this can be confusing today.
Still, based on its shape and size, the most likely explanation is that it was a personal grooming tool—either an ear spoon or a nail cleaner.
Today, most people no longer use these.
Modern hygiene products are more widely available, and people tend to be more cautious about what they use near their ears. Softer materials and safer designs have largely replaced old metal tools like this.
But that doesn’t make it meaningless.
In fact, objects like this are fascinating because they offer a glimpse into the past. A small item like this could remain in a family for decades, sitting quietly in a drawer until someone rediscovers it and wonders about its purpose.
That’s what made finding it so special.
At first, it seemed like a strange little spoon with no clear use. But after learning its purpose, it became a reminder of how people once lived—using simple tools, taking care of them, and keeping them for years.
It may not be something we’d use today.
But it’s still worth keeping.
Not because it’s valuable or rare, but because it carries a piece of history. Sometimes, the smallest items tucked away in an old drawer hold the most unexpected stories.
