I Came Home on New Year’s Eve to a Freezing Apartment—Then the Security Footage Exposed My Family’s Betrayal

PART 3: One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars

Around noon, the hospital cleared Liam to leave observation, although Maya needed to remain admitted.

Her condition was improving with antibiotic treatment, but her surgeon recommended continued monitoring.

I stayed beside her bed, one hand wrapped around hers, watching the slow drip of the IV and the small rise of her chest.

At 1:17 PM, Detective Moreno came back.

She set a folder on the table next to us.

“Your sister appears to have submitted an application for a credit line using your wife’s personal information.”

Maya raised a hand to her mouth.

“For how much?”

“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

My stomach tightened.

For illustration purposes only

“What was the purpose?”

“It was described as a real-estate investment.”

The detective opened the folder.

Inside lay a printed credit application.

Maya’s full name.

Her Social Security details.

Her employment background.

And a signature that closely resembled her handwriting.

But not perfectly.

“I didn’t sign that,” Maya said immediately.

“We understand.”

Detective Moreno placed another sheet in front of us.

“We also received this document from the resort.”

Across the top were the words PRIVATE CEREMONY PACKAGE.

Bride: Maya Carter.

Partner: Ethan Blake.

I read those details twice.

Then I looked again, as if the letters might rearrange themselves into something less monstrous.

“What were they hoping to accomplish?”

Detective Moreno turned toward Maya.

“We haven’t established every detail yet.”

That uncertainty frightened me more than a definite answer might have.

“However, one possibility we’re examining is that your sister was creating misleading records linking herself, while using Maya’s identity, to Ethan Blake.”

“For what reason?”

“Financial benefit.”

Naturally.

Money seemed to sit at the center of everything.

Ethan Blake was the son of a Florida property developer. His father had recently passed away, and preliminary public documents suggested Ethan controlled a family trust valued at several million dollars.

Chloe had been involved with him years earlier, but she later married Mark after Ethan declined to marry her.

Now it appeared she might have been trying to keep a hold on both men for financial reasons.

And Mark seemed to know about it.

That was the detail I found hardest to comprehend.

Then Detective Moreno showed me hotel surveillance footage forwarded by investigators in Miami.

The recording showed Mark standing right beside Chloe while she wrote Maya’s name on a document.

He didn’t look surprised. He didn’t question what she was doing.

Instead, he seemed to be helping her.

My sister’s husband was involved as well.

A vow-renewal ceremony alone would not create a legally valid marriage.

But investigators suspected Chloe hoped to combine photographs, signed paperwork, altered records, and financial documentation to suggest that someone identified as “Maya Carter” had maintained a long-term financial relationship with Ethan.

The arrangement was complicated enough to raise serious concerns.

Yet inconsistencies in the documents might expose the entire scheme once investigators examined them closely.

Their apparent plan rested on one assumption.

That Maya would remain unwell, isolated, and unable to recognize what was happening.

And that I would still be thousands of miles away.

That evening, my mother called once more.

Her cheerful attitude had vanished.

“David, what have you done with the accounts?”

I was seated beside Maya.

“Why?”

“All the accounts have been frozen.”

“That’s interesting.”

“Stop playing games with me. The hotel is demanding another payment card.”

“Then give them your own.”

Silence followed.

Then she gave an uneasy laugh.

“My own card?”

“Exactly.”

“You know my spending limit isn’t nearly that high.”

“Then maybe it’s time to check out.”

Her tone turned harsh at once.

“Has Maya been filling your head with nonsense?”

There it was again.

No concern. No remorse.

Not even a single question about her newborn grandson’s well-being.

Only accusations.

“Mom,” I asked softly, “what did Maya have to eat yesterday?”

“What are you talking about?”

“What did she eat?”

“I have no idea.”

“You agreed to look after her.”

“She is a grown woman.”

“And what did Liam have to drink?”

“How am I supposed to know?”

I shut my eyes.

Maya held my hand more tightly.

“Did you bring his prescribed baby formula to Miami?”

My mother fell silent.

Then she spoke words that would stay with me forever.

“We bought half of those groceries using the money you provided. We had every right to take some.”

“No,” I replied. “That money was meant for caring for my wife and son.”

“Oh, come on. We’re your family.”

“Maya and Liam are my family.”

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

I heard a sudden shift in my mother’s voice.

She was beginning to understand.

Not the entire situation. But enough to recognize what was happening.

“David.”

“No.”

“Please hear me out.”

“No.”

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

I glanced at the IV connected to Maya’s arm.

Then I remembered how cold Liam’s little fingers had felt against my hand during the taxi ride.

“You left my wife recovering from surgery, with an incision that needed medical attention, in an apartment without adequate heating or proper meals.”

“She made it sound worse.”

“Liam needed treatment for hypothermia.”

Silence.

Then my mother asked in a whisper, “She contacted the police, didn’t she?”

That told me everything.

She hadn’t asked whether they were recovering. She hadn’t asked whether Liam was safe.

Her first concern was the police.

That was what worried her most.

I chose my next words carefully.

“I suggest you contact a lawyer.”

She ended the call.

Twenty minutes afterward, officers in Miami detained Chloe and Mark at the resort.
