His Mistress Kicked Him Out, So He Tried Moving Back In—But His Wife Had a Revenge Plan Waiting

Part 1: Dinner Is Not Served

Four months after leaving me for another woman, my husband turned up on my doorstep with two suitcases and his golf clubs. He smiled as if nothing had happened and announced that he was moving back in.

Then he asked what I was making for dinner.

He seemed to have forgotten that after leaving a wife of twenty-two years for someone else, you can’t just walk back in the moment things go wrong.

But one phone call to my neighbor was about to uncover a secret that would make him regret ever showing up.

My name is Debbie, and when Gary walked out of our marriage four months earlier, he said he needed a fresh beginning. I was devastated. We had shared twenty-two years of memories, raised a son together, and built what I believed was a stable life.

Then one afternoon, he told me he was leaving for someone else.

Now, standing at my front door, he looked oddly confident.

“Debbie! My girlfriend threw me out, so I’m coming home!”

I stared at him.

“And you’re telling me this because…?”

He laughed.

“Come on. We’ve been married forever!”

“Interesting. You only remembered that after your girlfriend kicked you out.”

Gary sighed dramatically, clearly expecting sympathy.

“She said I was selfish. Can you believe that?”

“Did she explain why?”

“She wouldn’t stop explaining!”

I almost laughed.

Then he peered past me into the house.

“So, what’s for dinner?”

“Whatever you decide to cook at your next address.”

He chuckled, assuming I was joking, and dragged his suitcase closer.

“Seriously, Deb. Help me with these bags.”

I crossed my arms.

“Did your girlfriend pack them for you?”

“Yes.”

“How thoughtful. I would’ve charged you for the service.”

He rolled his eyes.

“Look, I know I messed up. But I’ve learned my lesson.”

“In four months?”

“Three and a half, technically.”

I looked at the man I had once loved more than anything.

Four months earlier, his return would have been everything I wanted. I had cried myself to sleep for weeks, wondering whether he would ever regret leaving.

But something had changed.

I had started taking accounting classes, redone the kitchen, and learned that living alone wasn’t nearly as frightening as I’d imagined.

Most importantly, I had learned that my happiness didn’t depend on Gary choosing me.

“Debbie, I just want things back to normal,” he insisted.

I smiled.

“You want a proper welcome home?”

His face lit up.

“Now you’re talking!”

“Give me five minutes.”

I went inside and called my neighbor Linda.

“Remember what you promised to help me with if Gary ever came back?”

She laughed.

“He’s actually there?”

“With two suitcases and his golf clubs.”

“Oh, Debbie. This I have to see.”

When I returned to the door, Gary was still grinning.

“I knew you’d come around.”

“Actually, I packed the rest of your belongings. They’re waiting in two boxes in the garage.”

His smile wavered.

“What?”

“Everything you left behind. Linda offered to stand with me when you came to collect it.”

He stared at me.

“I thought you were letting me move back in!”

“I never said that.”

“You’re seriously making me leave?”

“You said you wanted a fresh start. I’m simply helping you finish it.”

Gary’s face flushed red.

“Can we not do this in front of the neighbors?”

“Oh, is being embarrassed suddenly a problem?”

He lowered his voice.

“Debbie, I’m sorry. We can work through this.”

“You haven’t even asked whether I want to.”

He glanced over my shoulder and spotted the kitchen.

“You painted the cabinets?”

“Last weekend.”

“Blue? You know I hate blue.”

“I know. That’s why I finally chose it.”

Then he noticed the new lock.

“You changed the locks without telling me?”

“You haven’t lived here for four months.”

Gary looked offended, as though I had redecorated something that still belonged to him.

Eventually, he asked for a glass of water. I went inside and left him on the porch.

While I was filling the glass, my phone rang.

It was Linda.

“Debbie, why exactly did Gary come back?”

“His girlfriend kicked him out. Apparently, I’m his backup plan.”

Linda went unusually quiet.

“That’s interesting. My sister Carol told me something yesterday.”

“What?”

“Her friend Rachel just threw her boyfriend out after finding out he’d been lying about their relationship. He claimed he’d been divorced for two years.”

I frowned.

“Lots of men lie about being divorced.”

“True. But the timing seems strange. Rachel’s staying with Carol right now. I’m going to ask for a photograph.”

“You think they’re talking about Gary?”

“I don’t know yet. Keep him outside until I check.”

She hung up.

I stood in my kitchen, a creeping unease settling over me.
