His Fiancée Refused to Pay His Grandmother for Her Wedding Cake—Then His Sister Prepared an Unforgettable Gift.

Part 3: The Spoon

He turned toward the cake.

Ashley smiled triumphantly and started smoothing her hair, apparently getting ready for the photographer.

Daniel approached the four tiers.

For a long moment, he studied the beautiful ivory layers and the delicate sugar roses Grandma had spent four days shaping with her aching hands.

Then he plunged the spoon straight into the center.

It sank deep into the cake.

He scooped out a huge, uneven portion of sponge and frosting, lifted it, and put the whole mouthful in his mouth.

Ashley gasped.

Several guests gasped along with her.

Daniel kept chewing as the room went completely silent.

“Daniel!” Ashley screamed. “What are you doing?!”

He didn’t even glance at her.

After he swallowed, he turned and called across the hall.

“Grandma, this is wonderful.”

Grandma stared at him in disbelief.

Her mouth opened, but no words came out.

Daniel set the spoon on the cart and crossed the room while every guest watched.

When he reached Grandma’s chair, he knelt before her in his wedding suit and took both her hands.

“Thank you,” he said, his voice breaking. “For all the hours you put into this. I’m so sorry for how Ashley treated you.”

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Grandma blinked rapidly.

“Please don’t be upset. It’s your wedding day. I never wanted…”

“You did nothing wrong,” he said. “Nothing. Do you hear me?”

She nodded as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.

Daniel drew a deep breath, and somehow I felt it in my own chest.

“I’m sorry I didn’t find out what kind of person Ashley was before I married her. It’s going to be a mess to undo this.”

I nearly fell out of my chair.

Grandma’s face went pale with horror.

“Daniel, no, don’t say that, dear…”

Across the room, Ashley’s heels pounded toward us.

“Undo what?” she demanded.

Daniel stood and faced her.

“Our marriage.”

Ashley let out a small, strained laugh of disbelief.

“You’re joking.”

“I’m not.”

“Oh, my God. You’re going to ruin our wedding over a cake?”

“No, Ashley.”

His voice was calm, exhausted, and completely certain.

“The cake was never the problem.”

“This is your sister!”

Ashley jabbed a finger at me.

“She manipulated you! She set this whole thing up, and you can’t possibly mean it!”

“She didn’t make this decision for me. You did. With your own words.”

He slowly shook his head.

“I can’t build a life with someone who treats a vulnerable person in my family with that kind of contempt. I just can’t.”

“Too late! We’re legally married!”

“I know. I’ll deal with the legal part afterward. But I’m ending it.”

I waited, hoping Ashley would finally apologize.

Instead, she looked around at the watching guests, the damaged cake, and the photographer lowering his camera.

Then she exploded.

“Do you have any idea how much money I’ve spent making this wedding perfect?”

Daniel studied her in silence for a long moment.

“Apparently,” he said, “not enough to pay Grandma.”

Ashley opened her mouth, closed it, then opened it again.

Nothing came out.

Finally, she gathered her skirts, spun around, and stormed out through the barn doors, her veil fluttering behind her like a flag.

All 150 guests watched in stunned silence.

The wedding cake stood beside my table, tall and ivory, with a large crater where Daniel had driven his spoon into its center.

Grandma examined the damage.

She dabbed her eyes with a napkin, then let out the deep, practical sigh of someone who had seen plenty of kitchen disasters.

“You know, dear,” she said, “there are proper ways to cut a cake.”
