The Months That Followed
Life didn’t suddenly become easy.
Bills still came.
Work remained reliable but exhausting.
Still, something had changed.
A local housing cooperative offered Daniel steady maintenance employment.
“We value honesty,” the director told him. “We saw how you handled yourself.”
It wasn’t sympathy.
It was confidence.
Lila began sleeping more soundly. She no longer stiffened when someone knocked at the door.
On her bedroom wall, she pinned up a drawing: two stick figures holding hands in a large room with high ceilings. Above them she wrote, in uneven letters:
“We said the truth.”
Each time Daniel saw it, he remembered the yellow dress.
The lifted hand.
The instant the silence broke.
