A Place at the Table
When Lily arrived at the estate after school, she froze near the service entrance.
Jonathan found her standing there.
“Your mom is okay,” he said gently. “She’s getting the care she needs.”
Lily’s eyes welled with tears.
“Is it because of me?”
“No,” he replied softly. “None of this is your fault.”
He extended his hand.
“Come eat with me.”
She hesitated, then took it.
Jonathan led her into the formal dining room—the one no staff ever entered.
“Sit wherever you like.”
Her voice shook.
“I’m not supposed to be here.”
“Today, you are.”
He called for the chef.
“Make whatever she wants.”
Lily whispered, “Anything that isn’t too expensive.”
The chef smiled.
“How about a grilled cheese and tomato soup?”
Her face brightened.
“With real cheese?”
Jonathan watched her eat.
Real food. No guilt. No fear.
