Which means that your merger with Whitmore” — a pause — “requires my approval.”

The silence that followed was enormous.

Someone in the crowd whispered something. Someone else said “oh my God” very quietly.

Voss had gone from pale to something beyond pale. He looked at Marcus the way people looked at things that had been invisible and were suddenly, unmistakably, present.

“This is—” He stopped. “This is impossible.”

“Your lawyers will confirm it Monday morning,” Marcus said. “I wanted you to know first. I thought you deserved to hear it from a person, rather than a document.”

He paused, and something in his expression shifted — just slightly, toward something that was not quite sympathy, but that acknowledged, perhaps, that the situation was human.

“I also wanted to understand you,” he said. “The kind of man you were. Whether you had changed. Whether there was — ” He stopped. “It doesn’t matter. I understand now.”

Voss looked at his daughter.

Madeline looked at Marcus.

“You’re not homeless,” she said.

“No.”

“How long have you been — ”

“Three weeks, in this city. Two before that, in a different neighborhood.” He looked down at his bare feet, then back up. “I wanted to see things clearly. You see differently, without shoes. People speak differently to you. You understand what they value.” He met her eyes. “I’ve been watching your father’s world for a long time, trying to understand it from the outside.”

“And me?” she asked.

He looked at her for a long moment.

“I saw you in the car,” he said. “Yesterday. And the day before. I saw your face when you looked out the window. I didn’t know who you were.” He paused. “I knew what your expression was.”

“What was it?”

“Someone deciding something,” he said. “Someone at the edge of a choice.”

Madeline was aware of the crowd, and the phones, and her father standing at the perimeter of all of this like a man who has stepped outside the frame of a photograph and can’t find his way back into it.

She was also aware of the ring, still in her hand.

“So it was a test,” she said.

“And I passed it by proposing to a stranger in the street.”

“You passed it,” he said, “by saying please.” He looked at the ring. “Anyone could propose on an impulse. But the please — that came from somewhere real.”

He looked at her. “That depends, I think, on which parts of it you choose to stand in.”

She looked at the ring on her finger. It was strange — it fit exactly, which she had not noticed until now. She supposed the courier had been briefed to learn that detail, the way they were briefed about all the details in her father’s world.

“He’ll fight you,” she said.

“Yes.”

“He’ll try everything.”

“He’ll try what he can. It won’t be enough. The legal work is complete — it has been for two years. I’ve been patient about when to use it.” He glanced at her. “I wasn’t expecting this part.”

“The proposal.”

“Any of it,” he said. And there was something honest in the way he said it — not the smooth confidence he’d shown in front of the crowd, but something more uncertain. “I wasn’t prepared for you.”

“You said you saw my face in the car.”

“I did. I didn’t expect you to run into the street.”

“I didn’t expect it either,” she said. “I meant it, though. Both things. Refusing him. And — this.” She looked at the ring again. “Which is absurd. I don’t know you.”

“No.”

“I proposed to a stranger.”

“Yes.”

“On my knees on cold asphalt.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

“Our fathers ruined each other,” she said.

“And here we are.”

She almost laughed. “Here we are.”

Part Six: What Comes Next

She met him for coffee the following Tuesday. Then dinner the following Thursday. Then an afternoon in a gallery, where Marcus turned out to have opinions about art that were specific and unpredictable and occasionally wrong, which she found more reassuring than if he had been right.

He was, she learned gradually, the sort of person who had spent so long alone with a long project that he had grown slightly strange around the edges in ways that were not unpleasant. He had read extensively, and walked extensively, and had a habit of going quiet in the middle of conversations when something struck him — not rudely, but completely, as if he had stepped briefly into a different room. He was not what she would have designed, had she been given the option.

He was better than that.

Her father, through lawyers, contested the stake. The lawyers took one meeting with Marcus’s legal team and called Elliot Voss the following morning to tell him, in careful professional language, that it was uncontestable. Elliot called Madeline that afternoon. The conversation was short and largely one-sided and ended with him saying something he didn’t mean and then, a few days later, calling back and saying something he did mean, which was smaller and harder and cost him more.

It was a beginning.

The Whitmore engagement was dissolved quietly, by mutual and unsurprised agreement. Charles Whitmore did not seem heartbroken. He had the look, at the brief meeting arranged to formalize the dissolution, of someone who had been told a deal had fallen through — which is perhaps, she reflected, exactly what he had thought it was.

Marcus bought a pair of shoes. Brown leather, good ones, worn in quickly. She teased him about them, occasionally. He would look at his feet with the expression of someone who had not quite decided whether ordinary life was everything he’d hoped, and then look up at her, and she could tell that whatever the verdict was on the shoes, it did not extend to everything else.

Epilogue: The Ring

The wedding, when it happened, was in the following October — a year and three days after Harrington Street. Not in a grand venue with crystal chandeliers and a color palette argued over for six months, but in the garden of a house in the country, small and informal, family only, which by then meant something different and stranger and more real than it would have meant a year ago.

Madeline wore ivory, because she liked ivory, not because anyone expected it.

Marcus wore good shoes.

Her father stood in the back of the garden in the mild autumn afternoon and watched his daughter marry a man he had spent fourteen years wronging without knowing the full extent of it, and he looked old, and complicated, and not entirely unhappy, which was something.

Which it did.
