Hiding in Plain Sight
Behind stacks of soil and stone, I crouched and held Maya tight.
We wait, I signed.
Be very quiet.
Footsteps echoed.
The man’s voice hissed nearby.

“You can’t hide forever.”
Maya buried her face against my shoulder.
Then shouting. Crackling radios. Heavy boots pounding closer.
This was our chance.
Now, I signed.
We ran.
