PART 2: What the Screenshots Showed
The next day, Emily mentioned she’d fallen out with Maya, her former best friend, after Maya criticized Ryan.
I had met Maya during Emily’s freshman year.
“What did she say?”
“That Ryan wasn’t who I thought he was. She said he’d been talking about me behind my back.”
“Did you ask him?”
“He said she was jealous.”
I suggested hearing Maya’s side. Emily agreed, though reluctantly.
I called Maya using the number she’d given me on an earlier visit.
When I brought up Emily’s facial surgery, Maya fell silent.
“Oh, Emily. Please tell me you didn’t.”
“What does that mean?” Emily demanded.
“I tried to warn you.”
“Don’t start.”
“I still have the messages.”
Maya explained that she’d been part of a student group chat where Emily’s photo was passed around.
At first, Ryan stood up for his girlfriend. But once friends teased him for dating her, his behavior changed.
“He started laughing along,” Maya said. “Then he started making jokes himself.”
“You’re lying,” Emily whispered.
Maya forwarded screenshots.
The earliest showed Ryan telling someone to stop being cruel.
In a later exchange, another student shared Emily’s photo. Ryan joked about her chin, and others reacted with laughter.
Then Ryan wrote, “Don’t worry. She’s working on fixing that.”
The boyfriend Emily trusted had joined in her humiliation.
“That’s not what he meant,” she whispered.
But she couldn’t explain his words.
Maya said she’d confronted him, but he brushed it all off as harmless humor and accused her of meddling.
When Maya warned Emily, Ryan claimed she was jealous. Emily believed him and ended their friendship.
“I thought you hated him because you didn’t have a boyfriend,” Emily whispered.
“I hated how he treated you,” Maya replied.
Her voice wavered.
“I miss you, Emily.”
Afterward, Emily wanted to look back at Ryan’s earlier messages.
We scrolled through months of conversations.
At first, he’d urged her to ignore cruel classmates. Gradually, he began suggesting makeup techniques and sending pictures of women with smaller noses.
Eventually, he recommended cosmetic consultations, and whenever she hesitated, he kept promising she’d feel happier afterward.
One message read, “I just want us to be able to go places without all the drama.”
Emily stared at it.
“He said he was protecting me.”
Then she broke down.
He had fed the very insecurity he claimed surgery would fix.
Another question occurred to me.
“Did Ryan know you were using your college savings?”
“Yes.”
“Did he ever suggest waiting until you could afford it?”
Emily opened another conversation.
Weeks before the surgery, she had written:
“Maybe I should wait another year. I don’t want to mess up college.”
Ryan replied, “You’ve waited long enough. We can’t keep putting our lives on hold because of this.”
She read his reply again.
“He knew I was scared about the money.”
Another exchange surfaced.
Two weeks before paying her deposit, she’d asked why Ryan no longer invited her to gatherings.
He had written, “I just don’t want them making you uncomfortable.”
Yet Maya’s screenshots showed him laughing with those same friends around that time.
Emily lowered her phone.
“He wasn’t waiting for me to feel confident enough to go out.”
She turned to me.
“He was waiting for me to look different.”
