Chapter 2 – The Silent Code of the Vanguard
The inside of the moving armored transport was completely dark, except for the faint green glow from the tactical dashboard at the front. The only noise came from the heavy, steady pounding of the tires against the gravel as the convoy sped through the remote forests of Northern New England.
Lucy crouched on the cold steel floor, her wrists secured tightly with thick plastic zip-ties. Across from her, with his back against the reinforced wall, sat Matthew. Without his hearing devices, the silence surrounding him was complete, yet the fear radiating from his small body was overwhelming.
Lucy swallowed hard, forcing down the rising panic. She remembered the words of her great-grandfather Samuel: Never leave anyone behind, especially when the world falls silent.
Carefully, using the dim green light, Lucy lifted her bound hands. She aligned her thumbs and index fingers, tapping them together in a firm, deliberate pattern.
S-A-F-E, she signed. I am here. Look at me.

Matthew’s head jerked upward. His eyes locked onto her hands with urgent focus. The isolation that usually surrounded him began to crack. He raised his own hands, his fingers moving smoothly despite the restraints.
Why? he signed back. Where are they taking us? Father… he let them.
Your father is hiding something, Lucy responded, her thoughts racing as she remembered the silver chest being loaded into the vehicle. The woman in the black suit, Victoria, she said we saw the code.
Without warning, the vehicle came to a sudden, violent stop, throwing both children against the metal walls. The rear doors were yanked open, flooding the space with harsh white light from powerful industrial spotlights. They were inside a vast, abandoned warehouse near a private coastal shipping dock.
Victoria Vance stood at the center of the facility, surrounded by four armed guards. The silver chest was now open on a metal table nearby, revealing stacks of encrypted hard drives and international bond certificates worth hundreds of millions.
“Bring them out,” Victoria ordered, her voice cold and efficient.
The guards dragged Lucy and Matthew from the vehicle, forcing them to stand before the table. Victoria approached, looking down at Matthew with clear contempt.
“Your father thinks he can use you as the perfect shield, Matthew,” Victoria said, aware he could not hear her, but speaking for the others. “A silent, vulnerable heir to gain public sympathy while he moves the foundation’s offshore funds into his own private accounts. He believed I would remain silent forever, playing the loyal chief of staff while he built his empire on the backs of people like the Harpers.”
She turned her attention to Lucy, her eyes narrowing. “But your mother is currently being framed for the theft of these very documents, Lucy. By tomorrow morning, the news will report that Clara Harper kidnapped the Vale heir in a desperate extortion scheme. Alexander Vale will act as the grieving, heroic father, I will collect my sixty-million-dollar severance share, and you two will simply disappear from the ledger.”
“My mother would never steal anything!” Lucy shouted, her voice echoing across the metal walls.
“In the world of wealth management, little girl, facts are whatever we print on the front page of the Wall Street Journal,” Victoria sneered. “Take them to the lower holding cells. The freighter arrives at 0400 hours.”
