The Truth Comes Forward
A woman entered with calm authority, her presence immediately changing the atmosphere in the room.
Her name was Margaret Whitmore.
Two attorneys followed behind her, carrying neatly arranged files.
Margaret crossed the room without hesitation, not even glancing at Richard. When she reached Eliza, she knelt and opened her arms.
Eliza ran into them instantly.
“Grandma…”
Margaret held her tightly.
“I’m here now, sweetheart. I’m so sorry it took me this long.”
She stood slowly, her expression calm but firm.
“Officer, I believe we can clarify what happened tonight.”
One of the attorneys stepped forward and placed several documents on the desk.
“The estate of Eliza’s mother was placed into a trust for her care. Mr. Monroe was listed as a temporary trustee.”
Richard shifted uneasily.
The attorney continued.
“Over the past few months, a significant portion of those funds has been transferred into accounts unrelated to the child’s care.”
Margaret’s voice stayed steady.
“I had been reviewing those records carefully. I expected questions about money. I did not expect a child to be left alone beside a road.”
Officer Foster went through the documents and supporting evidence.
The conclusion was undeniable.
He stepped forward.
“Mr. Monroe, I need you to come with us while we sort this out.”
Richard tried to object, but his words carried far less force now.
Within minutes, the entire situation had changed completely.
