“He told me it was safe,” Sarah said. “Finally.”

Lily’s head turned toward him with an alertness that reminded him, suddenly and with startling force, of himself at that age — the quality of attention when something important is about to be decided.

“Are you—” Sarah started.

“I’m not asking for anything either,” Marcus said. “I’m saying there’s a room. I’m saying Sedona is as good a place as any to figure out the next part.” He looked at Lily. “And I’m saying that I would like to know this person, if she’ll let me.”

Lily considered him with great seriousness.

“You should know,” she said finally, “that I have a lot of questions.”

“Good,” Marcus said. “So do I.”

Epilogue: Morning

The drive to Sedona took seven hours. They drove through the night in Sarah’s car, Marcus’s motorcycle loaded into the back of a pickup he called to arrange from a contact in the next town. Lily slept in the backseat for the last three hours, her head against the window, the pendant closed in her hand.

Marcus drove. Sarah sat in the passenger seat and they talked — not about the past, not yet, not in the way that would need to be talked about eventually, with patience and time and probably difficulty. They talked about smaller things first. About Sedona, which she had never seen. About Lily’s inexhaustible interest in birds, which had begun when she was four and showed no signs of abating. Lily woke up.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” she said.

Lily looked at him sideways, with the particular sideways look of children assessing whether adults are being earnest or performative. She decided, apparently, that he was earnest.

“Okay,” she said.

They stood there for a while, the three of them, as the light changed over the canyon — reds deepening, shadows shortening, the world resolving from darkness into the specific, irreplaceable fact of itself. Behind them, the car ticked as the engine cooled. Somewhere below, invisible in the canyon depth, a bird was calling.

Lily took the pendant from her pocket and held it in her palm, both halves together, the wolf complete in the morning light.

“Will you teach me what this means?” she asked Marcus. “The wolf?”

He thought about how to answer. He thought about the person he had been at twenty, choosing that image for reasons he had understood only partially — the sense that the wolf represented something he wanted to be, something self-sufficient and honest and present. He thought about the nineteen years since, the things those years had cost and the things they had built in him, slowly, without his always noticing.

“It means you know where you belong,” he said finally. “Even when you’re a long way from it.”

Lily looked at the pendant for a moment longer. Then she put it in her pocket and looked back out over the canyon.

“Okay,” she said again. “I can work with that.”

Sarah, beside him, said nothing. But her hand found his, briefly, in the cold morning air — not a declaration, not a promise, just a fact, the simple warmth of it, the specific reality of two people standing in the same place at the same time after a very long detour.

He did not pull away.

The canyon held its light.

The bird below kept calling.

And the morning, which had been ordinary until it wasn’t, continued.
