Dark jeans. Sneakers that were clean despite everything else about him suggesting they had walked considerable distances. His hair needed cutting. His name was Nate.

Nate looked at Sofia.

He crouched down.

“She told me something,” Nate said. “For you.”
Sofia’s lips moved.

At the hall that he had been outside of on the most significant night of several people’s lives and was now standing in the middle of, having done the thing he came to do.
He took a step back.
A hand closed around his wrist.
Viktor’s hand.
Viktor was still on his knees, still holding Sofia, but his right hand had reached out and taken Nate’s wrist, and the grip was not aggressive — it was the grip of someone who needs to not let go of something yet.
“Don’t leave,” Viktor said. His voice was rough. “Please. Not yet.”
Nate looked down at him.
“Okay,” he said.
He stood where he was.

Nate’s grandmother’s name was Ida.
She was sixty-seven years old and worked the morning shift at a laundromat on Clement Street and took the bus home at two in the afternoon and had been raising Nate since he was four, when his mother had made a series of decisions that Ida had been unable to reverse through any means available to her. “Come eat something,” she said.
He sat at the kitchen table.
She put food in front of him and he ate with the focused efficiency of someone who has been moving on insufficient fuel and is now correcting the deficit.
“The little girl spoke?” Ida said.
“Yes.”
“Because of what you told her?”
He thought about it honestly. “Because she recognized me,” he said. “The telling was — I think she already knew her mother loved her. I don’t think that was information she was missing.” He looked at the table. “I think she needed to know there was someone there. That her mother wasn’t alone at the end. That someone heard her.”
Ida was quiet.
“And you heard her,” she said.
“I was the one who was there,” he said. Simply. “So yes.”
She put her hand on his head — briefly, without ceremony — and then took it away and sat down across from him.
“The father,” she said. “Viktor Solano. He didn’t know you existed until tonight?”
“No.”
“And now he does.”
“Yes.”
“And what does he want to do about that?”
Nate had been given a card. Viktor had pressed it into his hand before Nate left the hall — after Sofia had settled, after the guests had slowly, quietly resumed the function of the evening in the gentle, different way that events resume when they have been fundamentally changed by something that happened in the middle of them. “He wants to meet again,” Nate said. “He said he wants to understand what my grandmother needs and whether there’s something he can do.”

“He’s a wealthy man,” she said.
“Yes.”
“You know I don’t want—”
“I know,” Nate said. “I told him. I said you wouldn’t want anything that felt like payment. He said he understood and that wasn’t what he meant.” He paused. “He said he just wanted to know us. Because his daughter is going to have questions about that night for the rest of her life and he’d rather she be able to ask them to a person.”
Ida looked at her grandson.
He was eating the last of what she’d put in front of him, the way he always ate — completely, without waste, attending to the practical things even in the middle of larger ones.
She had raised him in rooms that required both of them to be practical. There had not been much space for the alternative.
She thought about a woman sitting down on a step in the cold, a year ago, and a ten-year-old boy going toward her because going toward things in need of attention was what he did, and had always done, and would probably always do.
She picked up the card.
She read the three contact lines.
She set it back down.
“Tell him Wednesday,” she said. “Afternoon. We’ll have tea here.”
Nate looked up.
“Here?” he said.
“My house,” she said. “He comes to us. That’s how that goes.”
A pause.
“Okay,” he said.
She stood up and cleared the plate and did not say anything else about it, because she was not a woman who said more than was necessary, and what was necessary had been said.
Viktor Solano came on Wednesday.
He brought Sofia.
Sofia came through the door of Ida’s house and stood in the small entryway and looked at the framed photographs on the wall and the coat hooks and the rubber plant that Ida had been maintaining for fifteen years and did not look, in any visible way, at Nate, who was standing at the entrance to the kitchen.
Then she looked at him.
“You were outside the window,” she said.
“What window?” Nate said.
“The car window. Two days before.” She was matter-of-fact. The voice of a child who has decided something and is stating it. “I saw you eating a sandwich. I looked at you.”
“I remember,” Nate said.
“How do you remember?” she said. “You see lots of cars.”
“You looked at me longer than people usually do,” he said.
She considered this.
“I was bored,” she said.
“I know,” he said. “I could tell.”
She looked at him for a moment longer.
“She wasn’t scared,” Sofia said. “Was she? At the end.”
Nate had been thinking about how to answer this question since the night at the library, when he had read the notice and understood that this question was coming.
“She was thinking about you,” he said. “That’s all she was doing. When I was there.”
Sofia was quiet.
“That’s not scared,” she said.
“No,” Nate said. “It isn’t.”
She nodded. The decisive nod of someone who has received an answer they needed and has filed it in the correct place.
“Okay,” she said. “Do you have anything to eat?”
Ida, from the kitchen: “I have biscuits.”
“I like biscuits,” Sofia said, and walked toward the kitchen, and Nate followed, and Viktor stood in the entryway for a moment looking at the rubber plant and the coat hooks and the framed photographs of a woman’s life, and then he followed too.
There is a photograph, taken three months later, at a spring event at Nate’s school.
Sofia is on the left. Nate is on the right. Behind them, slightly out of focus, is Viktor Solano.
And slightly behind Viktor, also slightly out of focus, is Ida — in her good coat, the one she wore for occasions that warranted it, standing with her handbag over her arm and the expression she wore when she was content and intended to show nothing about it.
The photograph was not taken by anyone who knew what the Aldenmere Event Hall meant to the people standing in front of it.
It was taken by a school administrator doing routine event documentation.
She sent it to parents through the school system. It was a school photo, in a folder of school photos, attached to an email that most parents opened briefly and filed.
Viktor printed it.
He framed it.

He put it on the shelf in the main room of the house, beside the photograph of Elena — Elena at twenty-nine, at the coast, in the particular afternoon light of a September that had been warmer than expected.
