The Quiet Street
Officer Marcus Bell and Officer Hannah Price were the first to arrive.
Their vehicle turned onto Willowbend Lane without sirens. The neighborhood appeared peaceful. A dog barked behind a fence. A sprinkler clicked steadily on a nearby lawn. A porch swing swayed gently in the breeze.
Nothing outside suggested trouble.
But Marcus had learned long ago that the quietest houses could hide the loudest danger.
He stepped out of the car and studied the windows.
Hannah approached the front door.
They knocked.
Once.

Twice.
No answer.
Then the door slowly opened a few inches.
Emmett stood behind it, pale and silent.
His small hand still gripped the phone.
Marcus softened his voice. “Are you Emmett?”
The boy nodded.
Hannah bent down slightly. “You did the right thing. Can you step outside with me?”
Emmett shook his head and pointed toward the hallway.
“They’re in there.”
