Chapter 1 — The Call That Wouldn’t Let Go

Dispatchers hear it all—panic, confusion, false alarms, and the silence between breaths. After twelve years on duty, Kara thought she understood fear’s boundaries. Then a small voice came through her headset.
“Please come fast. Someone is whispering under my bed. I hear them. I’m scared.”
The caller was Mia, age five. She spoke in quick, trembling bursts, holding back tears.
“Mia, where are your parents?” Kara asked, keeping her tone steady.
“They don’t believe me,” Mia whispered. “They say I make things up. But I can still hear it… right now.”
The line crackled with soft breathing—Mia’s—and something else. Faint. Thin. Kara felt a chill crawl up her spine. This wasn’t a prank.
“Stay on the line with me,” she said. “I’m sending officers now.”
