The Call Three Days Later
Three days later, my mother collapsed at work.
They took her to the public hospital.
My hands shook as I searched the phone for Jonathan’s number.
He answered immediately.
He arrived without questions.
The doctor didn’t soften the truth.
“If she keeps living like this,” he said, “her heart won’t hold up.”
Jonathan listened quietly.
Then he spoke.
“I can offer her a job,” he said. “Fixed hours. Fair pay. Health coverage.”
My mother shook her head.
“I don’t want to owe anyone.”
“You wouldn’t,” Jonathan replied. “It’s work. A three-month trial.”
After a long silence, she agreed.
