When I was 22, I found out that I was adopted when I tried to apply for a loan and needed my birth certificate. My ‘parents’ said they’d lost it, so I spent weeks trying to track a copy down from the government departments, providing name and date of birth, location of birth, etc. I finally got a letter back.
