If you’ve seen one of Donald Trump’s recent posts, you’ve likely noticed his well-known catchphrases—but have you ever wondered where they come from?

Experts suggest there’s a reason he often wraps up his messages with the eight-word line: “thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump is known for his unmistakable phrases. As president, he rarely held back, expressing his views directly and impulsively. Whether criticizing journalists or making controversial jokes in front of foreign leaders, his speech is often blunt. Supporters see this as proof of honesty and transparency, while critics consider it a lack of presidential decorum—and sometimes crude.
Even before his presidency, Trump had signature lines, from The Apprentice’s “You’re fired” to other memorable statements. Now, instead of that famous catchphrase, he frequently ends statements with “thank you for your attention to this matter.” But why?
Experts weigh in on Trump’s intent
Psychologists point to control, authority, and power as the driving forces behind this phrasing.
Claire Robertson, a psychologist specializing in political polarization at Colby College in Maine, notes that Trump often uses “moral-emotional language” designed to attract attention—words like “hoax” and “corrupt.” Posts containing this language spread quickly through his base, fueled by moral outrage.
But she finds this new catchphrase unusual:
“It doesn’t play super nicely with some established findings. It’s just weirdly formal.”
Holistic psychotherapist Shennika Moore-Clarke told HuffPost that, from a clinical perspective, the repeated use of “thank you for your attention to this matter” goes beyond mere formality:
“It carries undertones of control and authority.”
Robertson added:
“Trump is very conscious of wanting to be in control of a situation. This phrase assumes that everyone is giving it attention.”
Moore-Clarke explained further:
“It’s less about gratitude and more about command. It’s a way of asserting control, implying that readers should comply or take note. It comes off as, ‘This is something important that you need to pay attention to.’ It draws people in and reinforces his authority—even if the statement itself isn’t true or is harmful to certain groups.”

The power of ‘micro-cultures’ in language
Language carries cues that signal importance and create familiarity. In so-called “micro-cultures,” meaning is inferred rather than direct. Just as you might call your favorite bar “the pub” without confusion, certain phrases signal significance in their context.
In Trump’s case, “thank you for your attention to this matter” signals that the post is different from his usual rhetoric. It’s a cue to pay attention, highlighting the matter as important.
Whether deliberate or subconscious, experts agree that it’s a strategic tactic—one that draws attention, asserts control, and reinforces his image as being in charge.
