My 18-Year-Old Demanded I Rent Her an Apartment—She Didn’t Expect Her Dad’s Reaction

I’m divorced, and my 18-year-old daughter recently walked into the living room, plopped herself on the couch, and declared with zero hesitation: “You have to rent me an apartment!” I almost choked on my tea.

Now, some context: after the divorce, my ex-husband decided it would be “easier” to send money directly to our daughter instead of funneling it through me. On the surface, I didn’t mind—it meant less back and forth. But over time, it completely warped her attitude.

Instead of asking me for things, she got into the habit of demanding them. Clothes, gadgets, nights out—if I ever said no, she’d just go to her dad, who (wanting to be the “fun parent”) usually gave in.

But this? Demanding her own apartment at 18? That was a whole new level of audacity.

I calmly told her no, that she wasn’t ready for that kind of responsibility, and if she wanted to move out she could get a job and pay her own rent. Her response? She snapped: “Then dad will do it, and you’ll be out of my life forever!”

Well, okay then. If that’s the path she wanted, I wasn’t about to beg her to stay.

But here’s where things took a turn. Instead of swooping in to play hero like she expected, her dad completely flipped the script. He called me later that day and said he was appalled by her behavior. Apparently she’d gone to him with the same demand, expecting a blank check.

Instead, he scolded her for being manipulative and disrespectful. Then he told her point blank: “From now on, all money goes through your mom. She’ll decide what you get and when. If you want anything, you go through her.”

You could practically hear the explosion from down the block. She screamed, she cried, she accused us of “teaming up against her.” Tantrums galore. But eventually, after a lot of slammed doors and cold shoulders, she came around.

And the weirdest part? My ex and I… actually started getting along again. With both of us finally on the same page, there’s way less drama. Our daughter is learning some humility, and I’m quietly enjoying the fact that for once, her dad and I are a united front.

Honestly, I didn’t see that twist coming.
