After 260 Days of Tears, Shelter Dog Major Finally Finds His Forever Home

Note: We are republishing this story, which originally made the news in April 2024.

A dog’s spirit can fade after spending too long in a shelter. Many once-hopeful dogs grow quiet and heartbroken after months of rejection.

Major, a shelter dog from Indiana, was one such case. For over 260 days, he cried continuously after being abandoned by his former owners. Yet, his friends at the shelter never stopped believing that one day, he would find his perfect family.

Major, a four-year-old terrier and pit bull mix, has been under the care of the Hamilton County Humane Society in Indiana. At first, despite the heartbreak of being left behind, Major stayed cheerful. The staff described him as a “sweet and sensitive” boy who loved to play, especially with his favorite Jolly Ball. They called him a “true companion with a big heart,” affectionately nicknaming him “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob.”

But sadly, as the months went by, potential adopters kept overlooking him. The shelter staff began to notice changes in his mood. His once-bright spirit started to dim. “His spunky personality is fading,” the Humane Society wrote on Facebook. “This once-jovial boy who loved his balls now sits in his room and cries nonstop.”

To ease his stress, the team moved Major from the kennels to a visiting room. Still, they knew what he truly needed was a forever home. The staff explained that Major would do best in a household without small children or cats. He enjoys the company of other dogs but can sometimes be unaware of his own strength, so a meet-and-greet is always recommended.

He might not be the perfect fit for every home—but the shelter believed that somewhere, someone was meant for him. “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life,” his adoption page read, “this is the one for you.”

UPDATE: Major has been adopted!

On May 18, the Humane Society for Hamilton County shared the joyful news on Facebook: Major finally found his forever home. In a heartwarming video, the once-sad pup can be seen wagging his tail and walking proudly beside his new owner.
